Everyday Awesomeness: when karaoke makes you famous

This feel-good video has been doing the rounds. In it, Will and Monifa Sims turn a car-fuelling stop into a highly entertaining karaoke session. Ignore the questions about whether it was staged or not, just let it make your day.

Monster DNA Headphones – My thoughts?

This morning I received a pair of Monster DNA Headphones and I am super impressed! I was asked to assist with part of the launch campaign and I wrote about the headphones from a point of view where I hadn’t actually held them in my hands. But, this time I’m writing about them whilst they’re on my ears pumping some tunes.

First off, the headphones arrive in a beautiful box, everything boxed like Apple do their products.. a pleasure unboxing. Opening the box is easy and it doesn’t take more than a few seconds to have the headphones out and ready to test. There are a few things that I really love about them:

  1. You can plug your cable into the left side or right side – more useful than you think!
  2. You receive two cables, one for portable device listening and one specifically for laptops. Strangely, this is a huge bonus and they actually make all the difference – I guess you need to see for yourself, just take my word for it.
  3. They’re damn styling – I tell you, the younger generation today is all about cruising around with headphones and whilst I was out at the shop, I kid you not when I say they go stared at a few times.
  4. The bass these puppies produce is exactly what I’d expect and the minute I heard it a smile came to my face. Clear high quality audio!

There are a few other things that I could write about, but to be honest, I think you should get your hands on a pair and take a listen/play for yourself.

Here are some photographs:

Note: I was not commissioned to write this post.

The Kooks in Cape Town – 5GumExperience

As I am typing this I am busy pumping “for Now we are young” – the album of a band called Beach Party. You might not have heard of them, and neither had I until two weeks ago, but they were part of the wicked and massively successful 5 Gum Experience in Cape Town on Saturday night featuring The Kooks.

I tried to think of things that were poorly done or just made the event unenjoyable and I had to stretch my imagination to come up with only one thing. ONE THING for a venue with a good few thousand peeps? Job flipping well done.

The whole thing was so smoothly organized you felt like you were just rolling along with the tide. The buses transporting you to the event were on time and efficiently organized that the queue vanished chop-chop.

Once at the venue, you were searched and tickets checked without any hassle. There was a big scary man barking orders making sure no one stepped out of line and that you got inside before you even had an idea of where the hell you were.

The venue was traditionally kept secret right up until you arrived and they did a good job of not letting it slip; Salt River Film Studios being the lucky destination and what a sweet venue it was!

From there, there wasn’t a single hitch and the place was pumping! No one goes for the opening acts, but boy did Beach Party, Haasbroek & December Streets get some love! People were jamming their faces off and jolling along with the brilliant local acts with most of the crowd singing along word for word!

The local acts were top class and really took me by surprise that they were just that good live, but the Kooks stepped things up another notch and rocked the house. The tunes kept flowing with the crowd loving every minute of it. Peeps were fighting to climb things to get a glimpse and get their jol on properly. If you had someone’s shoulders to go on, it seemed you were on them without hesitation. The crowd was amazing and the Kooks seemed to love it and were feeding off it. The energy was great and you could see the whole place was loving it – I don’t think anyone wanted it to end!

Seriously, it was a fantastic event which was so well organized that Jacob might need to look over his shoulder. I can’t have enough praise for the whole thing. From how well the activation was initially handled, to how 5Gum kept everyone in the loop with every detail via social media, to how awesome the venue was and how well it was handled. There was loads of space, huuuuge bar with enough service, the sound was good, and there were loads of toilets. Oh ja, and the flipping Kooks were playing!?

I give this a solid 10/10 and have been playing the Kooks and Beach Party on repeat this morning! 5 Gum got the name spot on – it really was an Experience.

Rapper rates for live shows

It’s always interesting to look at the numbers that celebrities generate when they do their thing. Today I came across a post by a friend on Facebook which shows us what the top rappers earn when they do live shows.

Take a look at these numbers:

  2. Jay-Z – $3 million
  3. Eminem – $3.3 million for two nights at UK festival ($66k per song)
  4. 50 Cent – $2 million
  5. Rihanna – $800,000
  6. Lil Wayne – $500,000
  7. Drake – $155,000

  9. Akon – $120,000

Win tickets to the exclusive Monster DNA headphones launch!

Monster is launching the brand new DNA headphones (download PDF info sheet) in South Africa this month! The first launch date will be on the 23rd of March in Cape Town and the next event will take place in Johannesburg on the 24th of March – it’s going to be a killer event and I’ve got some tickets to give away!

Sexy headphones, sheesh!

Producer, musician, DJ and label owner, Alex Niggemann from Berlin will grace us with his presence at the events and awaken us to these magical new headphones! Alex is a mad house DJ, who spins between dark tech house and classic house music, if you’ve never listened to his beats, then you should probably take a listen (Look out for Poker Flat, Get Physical, and Supernature). This isn’t just another DJ, the guy’s got a big reputation, he plays in Europe and Ibiza on regular occasions and travels to Brazil and Asia to share his beats. In 2010 he launched his own record label, Soulfooled.

The focus at Soulfooled is on creating a platform for new music and promptly responding to the trends in the electronic music scene so that artists can release their music sooner. The label has already signed a number of famous international artists including Audiofly, Till von Sein, Phonique and David Durango. His productions enjoy a solid reputation. So it was no surprise to see him holding the number eight position on Resident Advisor‘s “Top 20 Charted Artists” in the end of 2009 ahead of DJ‘s such as Loco Dice, Joris Voorn or Ben Klock.

The night isn’t only about Alex and the new DNA headphones, there’s a fantastic lineup of local talents such as Richard Marshall, Rob Sloan, Guy Herman, Vanessa Holliday, Roger D’Lux, Floyd Lavine, Diggin4Dodge, JustSmart, Ryan Sullivan, Keren Onay, Les Afrique & A.B (Household Funk)

Monster DNA is all about expressing who you are and what you stand for. The headphones come stocked in four different two-toned colour designs but can be customised to suit your personality. The bold, triangular headset produces rich, fresh and clear sound. It is tough and durable and has comfortable advanced noise isolating cushions. It also has dual-port inputs that allows up to five headphones to connect and share headphones.

Monster is the world’s leading manufacturer of high-performance, sonically superior headphones. The Pure Monster Sound, thanks to the latest propriety technologies and sonic innovations, brings the full experience of live music to music lovers and concert goers everywhere. It is a close as one can get to the music.

Figure 8 by Ellie Goulding

I heard this track the other day on the radio and wasn’t quick enough to grab my iPhone to fire up Shazam, but today I was so fast, I almost crashed my car – ok, not really, but exaggeration was required ;)

Take a listen to this and tell me it’s not one of the cooler tunes you’ve heard in a while:

Here are the lyrics for those who are interested:

Breathe your smoke into my lungs,
In the back of a car with you I stare into the sun,
Still not too old to die young,
But lovers hold on to everything,
And lovers hold on to anything

I chase your love around a figure 8,
I need you more than I can take,
You promise forever and a day,
And then you take it all away,
And then you take it all away

Place a kiss on my cheekbone,
When you vanish me, I’m buried in the snow,
But something tells me I’m not alone,
But lovers hold on to everything,
And lovers hold on to anything

I chase your love around a figure 8,
I need you more than I can take,
You promise forever and a day,
And then you take it all away,
And then you take it all away

So lovers hold on to everything,
And lovers hold on to anything,
So lovers hold on to everything,
And lovers hold on to anything

I chase your love around a figure 8,
I need you more than I can take,
You promise forever and a day,
And then you take it all away,

I chase your love around a figure 8,
I need you more than I can take,
You promise forever and a day,
And then you take it all away,
And then you take it all away

Everyday Awesomeness: Walk off the Earth’s “I knew you were trouble” cover

Canadian band Walk off the Earth has made quite a name for themselves via Youtube. If you don’t recognise the name, you may know them as the five people who played one guitar, covering Gotye’s “Somebody that I used to know”. That video received over 35 million views in under two weeks.

Walk off the Earth started this year with another winner; a cover of Taylor Swift’s “I knew you were trouble”. The “bearded one” is absent from this video, but it does feature KRNFX with some impressive beatboxing. The band uses their voices instead of instruments for this song…wow.

Take a look:

Ewan Dobson – Trance guitarist

As we all know, YouTube reveals some truly talented people and that’s what we’re going to look at below. Ewan Dobson is a guitar player who’s insanely talented, he has managed to play a trance track on his guitar, definitely the first time I’ve seen something like this. Interestingly, the video has been around for a long time, over 2 years to be precise, and yet so few people I know have seen this.

Anyway, take a listen to this:

Here’s a bonus video:

Bon Jovi – Because we can!

Can you believe it, Bon Jovi has just released their new single called Because We Can (name of their tour). My fiance and I bought golden circle tickets for the concert happening in May (I think) in Cape Town and listening to this track has reminded me why it’s going to be such an incredible concert.

Let’s not waste time, here’s the track (lyric video only unfortunately):

You can hop on over to the Bon Jovi website for links to download the tune on iTunes and so forth.
