Awesome wooden iPhone covers

Awesome wooden iPhone covers

Matt Turner and Randy Lively, who are Apple fans with 30 years of experience in custom fabrication, decided to create a company called Material 6. The idea behind the company was to perfect the iPhone 4 experience by creating covers that are elegant and comfortable. The idea is that the wood replaces the glass back cover on the iPhone.

I’m sure you agree with me that this is a new level to covers – ok, so it’s not really a cover, but more a design addition, but nevertheless, you’ll agree with me that they’re pretty darn awesome?

This awesome desk by Nüvist is too cool to not blog about. I don’t have many words, apart from “I want!”.

Magnetic wood – minimalist natural iPad stand

Magnetic wood - minimalist natural iPad stand

Etsy always has gems and one of those gems was found this evening, an iPad stand using magnetic wood:

This wonderful piece was made by Anna from San Francisco and sells for just $27 (delivery to South Africa is $6.50 on top). All you do is place the two slim stands on either side of the iPad (any direction) and you’ll achieve a perfect balance – as simple as that.

Another bonus is that you can choose from maple, cherry or walnut wood, with cream, milk chocolate or charcoal felt lining :)

Condom with QR code to measure your sexual experiences!

I came across this pretty cool social initiative that encourages youngsters in Stockholm to get involved and create a love making profile.

The concept works like this: 50,000 condoms branded with QR codes were given out; the QR code when scanned reminds you to wear a condom and then goes on to measure rhythm, sound and duration of every performance! It then allows you to create a profile that aggregates your information and then matches you to other people with similar performance styles.

How awesome is that?!

Dry-erase whiteboard walls for your office

Dry-erase whiteboard walls for your office

I always thought that an office with walls that you could write on would be a great idea. I love innovation and I love sitting in the middle of what’s happening so what better than sitting in and amongst all your ideas? I love the thought of glass separators between work stations which make text written on them visible when a switch is clicked, but that’s getting advanced, so let’s settle with this idea.

John Goscha is a young entrepreneur who quit his job to follow his dream of IdeaPaint, which turns your wall into a writing space.

I think it’s awesome I hope it goes global!

Samsung B&O Phone

Samsung B&O Phone

More devices! I’ve honestly lost track of mobile devices, there just seem to be so many and as I start to catch up, new ones are released. Today is the same, this time it’s from Samsung and it’s a Bang & Olufsen inspired concept device.

The Samsung B&O is essentially a Galaxy, but with a B&O masculine industrial engineering feel to it. Must admit, it’s quite a sexy looking device that Antoine Brieux and NAK Studio have come up with.

Let’s have a look:

Everyday Awesomeness: sow, grow, and eat your own veggies

Everyday Awesomeness: sow, grow, and eat your own veggies

This week’s Everyday Awesomeness is for urban gardeners and veggie growers in Cape Town! If you grow your own salads, veggies and herbs, there are two websites you may want to visit: The Food Collective and Soil for Life.

If you’re interested in heirloom vegetables (vegetables that have survived through natural pollination and are often difficult to come by), keep an eye on The Food Collective. Their recent winter Heirloom Seedling Share offered a range of “open-pollinated heirloom seed varieties” in the form of unusual winter vegetable seedlings that you’re unlikely to find elsewhere in the country. This year the seedlings were various types of lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, peas and cabbage:

Check their website for more opportunities and events (here’s hoping for a summer seedling share)!

At Soil for Life (an awesome NGO) you can buy vegetable seedlings, worm farms (to feed your veggie garden) and you can pick your own fresh produce from their organic garden. Visit their website for more information on how they’re feeding, teaching and building up needy communities.

If you know of anywhere else to purchase heirloom or organic seedlings, let us know in the comments!

How much to spend on an engagement ring?

How much to spend on an engagement ring?

I received an email from an iMod reader asking this very question. The email went on to say that some people say it’s 6 x gross monthly salary, but is someone who earns, say, R50,000 a month meant to spend R300,000 odd on a ring?

It’s definitely an interesting question, one which every man who’s thinking of proposing has probably asked someone about or researched. It was just over a year ago when all these questions hit my mind, what do I spend, what is clarity, what is cut, what is carat?

The truth is that I don’t have the answer, but my opinion about this isn’t so much about how much you spend, because it’s an emotional thing, it’s about the love. That isn’t to say that a lucky packet will suffice, women love their diamonds, ya know ;)

When I bought Fe’s ring, it was expensive, but it wasn’t 6 times what I mean over 6 months, that’s for sure. And, the fact that I didn’t put 6 months of salary into it didn’t stop her from falling in love with it and having every single friend going, “oh wow”. I boiled it down to what I could afford, but I also worked on the design, so it was up to the jeweller to quote me on achieving what I wanted. For those who are interested, here’s Fe’s ring:

I did some further research online to see what other’s opinions were and one that popped up numerous times was that of spending 2 months of salary on the ring and that definitely made more sense to me. However, this is still a great deal of money to spend and would take a lot of time to save up for.

So there are many opinions and my opinion is to make it about the coming together of two people and not about the ring. Yes, spoil your lady, but if she loves you and understands you, she’ll understand what you can afford and will work with you – think about it ;)

So, what do you think, how much would you spend on an engagement ring?

Top Shop in South Africa – Cape Town & Johannesburg

Top Shop in South Africa - Cape Town & Johannesburg

I’ve never been to the UK, but hundreds of my friends have and there’s one shop they always mention – Topshop. Topshop is one of the most popular brands overseas for women and the great news is that it’s coming to South Africa!

Now, from what I understand, this news should have many women jumping up and down with joy – correct me if I’m wrong though please!

On March 6th 2011, Topshop announced that it would be opening a flagship store in Johannesburg this month, July, but this seems to have changed, as Topshop announced that the store would in fact only open in Johannesburg in November and would also include a Lady Gaga collaboration range. Along with this news was that a Topshop would also open in Cape Town, but there aren’t more details about this yet.

I did some Googling after hearing this news from a mate of mine and found the Topshop Facebook page, which appears to share this information. I’m not sure if it’s an official official page, but it certainly looks like it.

If you know more, please do pop me a comment and share.
