Facebook gets even better!

Can you believe it, Facebook received over 250 million photograph uploads a day. Stop and think about that for just a moment, that’s a huge amount, I don’t even think “huge” is the right word to describe the sheer quantity. Imagine the storage facilities!

Well, the good news is that Facebook recognizes the desire of users to upload photographs and lots of them and they’re evolving their services. Now they’re allowing for larger photographs, which will display at 720px by 960px and they say photographs will load twice as fast! So that’s bigger and faster.. two attributes which normally work against each other.

This comes just after another announcement by Facebook in which they provided us with better ways to share posts, photographs, tags and other content with exactly the people you want to share your media with. Inline Profile Controls, Profile Tag Review, Content Tag Review and View Profile As are new tools that help you see who’s seeing what so you can decide whether they should be seeing it or not, because Facebook says, “Your profile should feel like your home on the web – you should never feel like stuff appears there that you don’t want, and you should never wonder who see what’s there”.

These are excellent enhancements to the social network, enhancements that we don’t necessarily notice consciously, but enhancements that just make our experience even better.

Instagram [infographic]

I’m not too much of an Instagram user, but I sure do know a lot of people who use it, so I felt I would publish the infographic. We’ve also had some blog posts here about Instagram before, such as Photo Sharing with Instagram amongst others.

I’ve watched Instgram grow in the background behind some of the more popular applications such as Facebook, FourSquare and Twitter, but it’s certainly making great progress, the stats show this quite clearly.

Here’s the infographic:

On Pinterest you can create a community by following people’s pinboards, commenting on their pins and repinning pins of interest to your own pinboards.

You can also find interesting pins by searching. A search for infographics brought up some of the following pins:

I’m officially a home owner

People always talk about setting goals because they create inspiration, motivation and achievement. This isn’t a joke, it’s the truth and it’s something I’ve done for many years of my life. About 6 years ago I was studying, delivering pizzas and mostly just parking off with friends not doing too much in my life. Sure, I did the odd web project here and there, and I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my life, but no goals were physically set and when 2005 (or so) arrived I decided to set goals. I had two big goals: 1. Find a job I love and a team I love working with. 2. Buy a house.

When I started working at Yeigo I fulfilled the first goal, the team was awesome, I had creative freedom and I just really loved my job – This unfortunately came to an end and I found myself in a position where I was once again with 2 big goals that I so badly wanted to fulfill. When I met with Sue and Brendon at The Forge Web Creations I saw something, I saw a job that I could see myself loving and I saw people who I knew I would get along with, it didn’t take long before I realised I had fulfilled my goal again and to this day I continue to do so. The second goal, however, was a big big goal, a goal a lot of people told me I was stupid to focus on, a goal people said I wouldn’t achieve and should rather wait until my mid 30′s and a goal which a lot of people nodded at with a smirk in their face. Anyway, that goal has been achieved and I cannot begin to explain how it feels.

The feeling of pure euphoria is incredible, it’s not about the house, it’s about how I went about achieving this goal and it’s how I didn’t allow others with negative opinions to keep me from achieving it – I just fought, fought so freaking hard to achieve it and doing so has given me an overwhelming sense of euphoria and proudness. The journey between saying, I want this house this first time I walked in and when the keys were handed to me were insane, I honestly had no idea how difficult and expensive buying a house would be! Sure, I didn’t think it was going to be cheap, but the legal fees, registration fees and bits and pieces that go with it are scary, to say the least. But, I pushed through and I now own a gorgeous house in the sought after area called Harfield Village in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.

Front door key :)

It’s a 2 bedroom house with a stunning kitchen, large lounge, magical bathroom, dual parking bays and a courtyard with garden and fountain. I must just tell you though: The bathroom has fairy lights above the contemporary bath on legs, so when you’re bathing, it feels as though candles are flickering – I guess you have to see it (I’ll post pictures soon) to really understand, but just take my word for it, it’s magically relaxing. Fe and I are going to take before and after photographs so that we can make a scrap book and as I take the photographs I’ll post them up here for all of you to see. I can’t wait to give the kitties the freedom to run around the little courtyard, they’re going to be in absolute heaven!

Bella & Calla

It really is a truly amazing feeling and I can’t wait to move in!

Move in date: 12th August!

The hard part now is setting myself new goals and not just any goals, goals that intrigue me and motivate me. Motivation is not a problem though, the massive bond each month will keep my butt in gear ;)

Crowd Sourced Instagram Music Video

Sony have come up with a digital marketing campaign, which aims to fuel the music video of The Vaccines new single called Wetsuit. The idea is fairly straight forward, but definitely something new:

The public are able to submit photographs in real-time by simply shooting and tagging with the hashtag #vaccinesvideo on Instagram. The director of the movie is going to then source all the content for the music video from what the public submit.

I’m a big fan of user generated content, I feel that it gives something a real feeling to it and you normally find that other people relate, so concepts get immediate traction.

Here’s the promo video:

Aurora Australis

This incredible photograph taken by NASA is buzzing around the Internet and it’s quite incredible. At first it doesn’t look like too much, but give it a moment, look deeply and you’ll see the beauty and depth.

NASA says, “This image is of Atlantis and its Orbital Boom Sensor System robot arm extension backdropped against Earth’s horizon and a greenish phenomenon associated with Aurora Australis. One of the station’s solar array panels appears at upper left. Because of the exposure time needed for this type of photography, some of the stars in the background are blurred.

Path: The Anti-Social Social Network

Path is one of the lesser known social networks out there. In fact, its makers refer to it as ‘the personal network’. And personal it is, as you’re limited to 50 friends, all of whom need to have iPhones.

Path is quite a refreshing change from traditional social networks where we tend to try keep the numbers of our friends and followers up. Instead, it is intended for you to share moments from your life with either a photo or a short 10 second video.

Everyday Awesomeness: spectacular canvas prints by Adi W

I spotted the striking photography of local talent Adi Weerheim at the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show (www.housegardenshow.co.za). In the midst of tempting fudge stalls, laden foodie tables and intriguing art and craft stands, her protea canvas prints stopped people in their tracks. I can see these gracing the pages of House and Leisure or Elle Decoration!

Picture it: Photo Sharing with Instagram

When it comes to photo sharing social networks, Instagram is the most popular by far. It’s a photo sharing app for the iPhone that connects to Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, among others. The premise of this app is to take photos, apply filters and optionally a tilt-shift effect and share it with friends.

You can view feeds of friends’ photos, like them and even comment on them. There’s also a Popular tab for viewing the most liked photos on Instagram, which provide inspiration to the newbies and the mobile photo geeks alike.

The focus is on the Share button, which lets you choose between taking a photo and choosing a picture from your library. Once you’ve taken your photo or chosen your picture, you can select one of the fifteen preset filters, with names like Poprocket and Gotham, add a tilt-shift effect, or even leave the photo as is, and share it via your preferred social network or even email.

Instagram has also added a news feed, with details of which photos your friends liked and commented on, and also a feed showing who commented and like your photos and who is following you. There is also a profile page which gives you the usual statistics regarding followers, people you follow, the number of photos taken and yet another photo feed, this time with only the photos you’ve uploaded.

The only drawback is that Instagram does not have a web interface. There are third party web applications like Webstagram and Inkstagram, which allow you to view, like and comment on photos, but I would prefer to have the option of uploading my photos and applying filters to them online.

Instagram is a fun application, and I’ve taken a few photos, but I must admit, it only gets used on the few odd occasions and while the filters are pretty cool to play around with, they do get old rather quickly.

Do you use any mobile photo sharing apps? Which ones are your favourite? Tell us in the comments.
