Months have passed since local online casino’s appealed against new laws to ban South African’s from gambling online and finally the trial has passed. On August 23, 2011, it was announced in an Appeal Court in Bloemfontein that the appeal has been denied.
With immediate effect most casino enterprises will be closing their doors to players in the South African market. So far this includes Piggs Peak Casino, Piggs Peak Poker, Piggs Peak Bingo and Volcanic Gold Casino.
There are casino’s that are still operating, such as Silver Sands Casino, which continues along strongly and many of the local casino’s will still trade, but only to International audiences. If you are an online gambler, my advice would be to withdrawal the funds you have in your account before it’s too late and if you’re desperate to gamble, head on over to Silver Sands, where the doors are still open. But remember, it is YOUR responsibility.
I think it’s a great shame, you can still walk into a casino if you need to gamble, so it’s not as though they’ve banned it on- and offline. Anyway, it’s not up to me, I just think the wrong decision has been made, in fact, like PayPal coming to South Africa, if the government was more involved, they’d probably realize that they could have made a boatload of money.
