Google hits 1 billion users!

Sheesh, talk about the big getting bigger! Google’s reach a billion users, Microsoft is around 900 million, Facebook around 700 million and Yahoo are just below 700 million. Can you imagine having a billion people using your services? Incredible. In 2005, Google had just less than 500 million and Microsoft were ahead of the pack.

With services like Twitter and FourSquare growing at unbelievable rates, it will be interesting to see if they catch up with these giants in the next few years. I mean, FourSquare reached 10 million members in the space of just 2 years!

If you had to put your money on one of these websites, which one would it be? Is Facebook the obvious choice? Perhaps it is..

What is Apple iCloud?

One of Apple’s new movements in technology is the iCloud, a way to listen to your music where ever you are. For those of you who don’t know what Cloud technology is, it refers to being able to access your information from anywhere provided you have an Internet connection. So, this is exactly what Apple are going after, but in the music industry.

It’s been said that more information will be released at Apple’s WWDC, which is taking place on tomorrow – mark that date if you’re an Apple fan.

If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the iCloud, you can do so by clicking here or watching this video:

How to add Google +1 to your website

I mentioned that Google Plus One would be available for website publishers a while ago and it’s finally here, the Google +1 button is ready and waiting!

Google announced today that they had rolled out the Google +1 button to the entire Internet and anyone can get codes for their website. The process of getting the source code is incredibly simple, all you need to do is click here, customize your button and copy/paste the code onto your website. You’ll be presented with a button generator like this:

This is quite an exciting release from Google as Google has been working incredibly hard on their social search and I’m pretty sure getting your articles +1′d will result in better rankings, but don’t quote me on that ;)

Google Image Search introduces subject sorting

Some news from Google today involves a new feature they’ve introduced to their Image Search. At the moment, an image search matches images to search terms in a specific way, whereas with subject sorting, Google’s able to give us more relevant results. This is best displayed in a video, so if you’re interested, take a watch:

Go and give it a try :)

Facebook to buy Skype for 3 billion dollars?

One thing I really enjoy seeing online is giants trying to buy giants. We’ve watched the search engines try to buy each other, we’ve watched Twitter appear in various buyout situations and now we’re going to watch Facebook try to buy Skype, apparently.

Sources say that Facebook is looking at offering Skype in the region of $3 billion and $4 billion. Even that’s a chunk of change for Facebook’s CEO Mr Zuckerberg! I wouldn’t mind having a few billion to throw around, who wouldn’t?

Three months ago, Skype launched a new version with a huge focus on Facebook. In fact, they created an entire Facebook tab so that you could view your friends posts, see where your friends were checking in and even call them directly. It’s no surprise that Facebook and Skype might be chatting!

I guess I could sit here for hours discussing why I think Facebook would want to go this route, there are so many reasons. If you want to discuss, leave a comment below. What will be interesting though, is whether any of the other giants start to get involved!

Some videos of the Google self-drive car

Last year I blogged about the Google self-drive car, but at the time there weren’t too many details. Now, two videos have popped up, which give us a much better idea of what all the hype is about, take a watch:

Remarkable what technology is allowing us to achieve these days!

3D printing taken one step further

There’s no doubt that technology isn’t getting incredibly advanced and when it comes to the MIT peeps, we get to see some amazing advancements in technology.

Amit Zoran and his team at MIT Media Labs have come up with something quite incredible – a device that prints in 3D. Ok, this isn’t the first time that this has been done, but what they’ve done is create a device that can print intricate designs in 3D, which differentiates them!

Here’s a video worth watching:

I wonder what the folks at Paperserve would think about this!

Angry Birds trumped by 14 year old

We live in a world where a simple idea combined with some talent can lead to something bigger than imagined. This is exactly what happened when a 14 year old guy, Robert Nay, released an iPhone game he’d been working on – Bubble Ball. Nay is in 8th grade student!

The game was released on the 29th of December and has already seen over a million downloads. This puts the game ahead of ever popular Angry Birds!

Here’s a video I found whilst searching YouTube:

ABC interviewed Nay, if you’re interested in watching the video, here you go:

You can grab the game from iTunes, here.
