Learn the Internet – New UCT course!

I grew up using the Internet, it’s sort of like my second home really, a place I can lose myself and learn lots along the way. Because of this, I sometimes forget that not everyone understands it all and when names such as bing, twitter, facebook, skype, paypal and so forth are brought up, there are a lot of people who are completely clueless around this.

Not knowing the basics about the Internet in today’s day and age, can put you behind your peers, not only on a social level, but also a career level. Having this understanding of the Internet is an essential tool in business and we should position ourselves to know at least the basics.

Here are some services available on the Internet that could really help you:

PayPal – PayPal is how individuals and businesses send and receive money online. No requirement for doing direct transfers which take days and have hefty bank charges; you can simply transfer money instantly.

Twitter – Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Think of it as text messaging with a little more power, and also a lot cheaper as it’s over the Internet.

If you want to learn about all these great services, then now’s the time to look at the UCT Internet Super-user course. The course runs for 10 weeks and includes modules about Internet Communication Tools, Information Securiy, Social Networking, Mobile Technology and an assortment of other things. The course starts on the 12th of April 2010 and if you’re keen, you need to register before the 31st of March, so you’ve got a few weeks left. If you want to register, you may contact Deborah on 021 685 4775 or pop her an email on deborah@getsmarter.co.za

I know the managing director of GetSmarter, Sam, and know that he only offers great courses, which are well researched and that will teach you the basics that you need to know. That being said, I put the iMod stamp of approval on this course :)

What’s happening on the PayPal scene in SA? Do many people use it? I’ve got a PayPal account attached to my UK bank account – and I’ve been wondering how I’m going to transer it from here to my new SA account when I get home in July?

Got something to say? Go for it!
