Google Reader goes real-time
Yesterday I received a tip from an iMod reader telling me that Google Reader was going real-time, and I think I can see it already! As I publish these blog posts, I’m watching them appear in Google Reader – absolutely brilliant.
I did a little more research and it’s true..
If you have been following a recent event on a Blogger or Posterous blog via Google Reader, chances are that you might have noticed the near-instantaneous delivery of a published post. Yes, Google Reader has sped up; posts from blogs that use the open PubSubHubbub (PSHB) protocol for publish/subscribe communications are put up instantaneously on Google Reader. This is great news for those who wish to follow a current development closely without delays!
Though it has always been a source of disappointment to many Google Reader users, the company did not address the complaint of late delivery till now. Google, however, is yet to officially state anything in this regard, though a Google spokesperson confirmed this development. PubSubHubbub is used by Google itself (and Blogger by extension) via Feedburner and the App Engine. Wordpress users can install a PSHB plugin to their blog to enable this functionality.

Only problem is that I’ll now have to actually ensure the post is properly complete before posting – it has become far too easy to hit ‘Publish’, realise the mistakes, and then go back and make changes. My slackness now gets INSTANTLY immortalised…

@Stu – That’s a good point indeed; but it’s a good thing, makes us get things right before we just bang them out..

I’ve just noticed something else too – after my previous comment I promptly went and published a post with a typo in it. I fixed it two hours later; and went and rechecked in Google Reader a few minutes ago- the correct and updated version is there (correctly showing as ‘already Read’). This never used to happen, but is a bonus.

Ye @Stu, now that’s useful! I always had the same feeling as you when it comes to publishing a mistake and it’s happened before, so this will definitely be useful, now the update is awesome, guess we need them to stop the real-time process by 30 minutes or so ;)
