You’re mistaken, Chris.

Apple’s (pre-tax) price of $200 excludes the monthly contract payments, while the local price of ±R8000 includes tax, and is not subject to a contract.

The American price of $200 is much the same as local mobile service providers charging “only R199″ for a phone, but locking the consumer into a two-year contract, with obligatory monthly payments of R99+, resulting in a total loss more in the order of R2500 for the “R199″ phone.

Ye, it’s a very good thing that it’s not dependant on other service providers, but Core still has the rights to import and mark up as chosen. At the end of the day, South Africa of all places needs to be “enabled”, if Core are going to make this unaffordable, they’ll be shooting themselves in the foot – I’ll be the first to blog and #brandminus them!

Yeah i don’t see it influencing the iphones pricing either..

but i also don’t think its going to be as expensive in SA as the iphone compared to the rest of the world..

Personally i think the fact that the iPad is a flat device and isn’t dependent on any other service providers like VodaCom etc, makes it easier to get your hands on. You will find people will buy them online now and get them shipped in themselves or on a overseas trip pick one up, where as with the iphone you always had that concern of “will it work with my cellular network etc”….

Ye mate, I mean, the iPhone was going for like $200, which is just shy of R2000, but here it costs R8000 doesn’t it? That’s 4 times as much, which puts the iPad at R16000 :/

Oh yeah…damn! I should have known, it would never just be R4000!. It will be interesting to see what sort of price they factor in, but you’re right, it will be quite huge

I don’t think it’s going to influence the price of the other iProducts to be honest. See, the problem here is that the iPad is going for $499, but when Core import it to South Africa, we’ll probably be faced with R12,000+ knowing them :/ That’s exactly what happened with the iPhone!

Do you think this has the potential to drastically reduce the price of the iPhone? Because the iPad looks phenomenal, I’d hardly want to pay more for an iPhone! Obviously two different things really, but still.
