Fishing in Houw Hoek

I had an early start today (7am), as I was heading out to Houw Hoek to do some fishing. I arrived there just before 9am as I had a couple things to arrange before heading out.

What a fantastic place, just beautiful and peaceful, and only R20 to fish for the day. However, it’s strictly catch and keep at R85/kg, which I guess isn’t too bad if you don’t catch too many. I, unfortunately, didn’t manage to catch :( I tried an assortment of flies and positions, but I think the real problem was that the sun was out in full force and the fish were hiding in the shaddows, I guess I need to get there much earlier next time. There were fish though, I saw quite a few jumping in and amongst the lilly’s.

Regardless of my success, it was just really awesome to get out and enjoy a day of practising – If you’re new around here, I’ve been spin fishing for many many years, but have only recently started fly fishing. In fact, today was my second time, last week was my first time fishing at UCT dam.

Anyway, I felt now would be a cool time to let you have a peak at my tackle box ;)

As you’ll see, I have lots of spinners, worms, lizzards, frogs and such, but my fly collection has only just begun and it won’t be long until I start making my own, that’s a project for March when I’m in my new place and have an office!

Wicked name, rings a bell in fact. I usually browse sealine.co.za, but finseekers looks good. Thanks!
