Freshwater fishing at UCT Dam

Today I decided to wet my line and enjoy some sun, so I headed off to UCT dam with my hopes high. I had read that the dam gets stocked, but has not been stoked with Trout (rainbow and golden) for the past two years, but this didn’t stop me as I had also read that there are largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as tilapia and carp.

During the months of Feb to May, you’re allowed to use a spinner, however, outside those months it’s strictly fly-fishing only. I’m big into spinners, so I had to mission out and got myself a fly rod/real and some tackle before heading down to the dam.

I’m sad to say that I didn’t have any luck and it seemed that the ducks were more interested in my activities than the fish, but what I can say is that I saw a shoal of 4 or 5 big (2-3kg or so) bass/carp (sorry, it was hard to see them) swimming at the surface. I cast my fly right out to them and they watched it and chased it, but wouldn’t bite.

If you’re interested in fishing at the UCT dam, you will need a permit, which you can get Mon-Fri at the Sports Admin (upstairs at Sports Center) for R20.00/day.

I always enjoy myself when I go fishing, even when I don’t catch, so I’ll be out there again soon!

Ever fished at UCT dam? Please let me know if you caught anything!

Ye mate, I have to admit, I felt rather vulnerable being there alone fishing, anyone could stroll in and take my gear.

I saw some seriously big fish, but they just weren’t keen on my fly, perhaps I was just using the wrong fly – Think I had a wooley bugger on at the time..

Know any good places for fresh water fishing that aren’t too far out? I’m desperately trying to put a decent list together..

Hey Chris, did you manage to locate any other places close to Cape Town?

  6. Chris M says:

Hi Mike, I’ve actually got a whole website dedicated to it: http://www.flywaters.co.za – Pretty sure you’ll spot a number of places there that will tickle your fancy. I’ve put a decent amount of effort into the places, so it is accurate. Please feel free to leave a couple comments that side, need to get people engaging :)
