Uncapped ADSL for R500 per month

New ISP DigiChilli (http://www.digichilli.com/) has entered the South African market offering uncapped services utilising SEACOM bandwidth. The packages offer very competitive pricing compared with other uncapped services on the market.

The ‘Mild’ package offers an uncapped 256Kb/s connection for R500 per month. The ‘Medium’ package offers a 512Kb/s uncapped service for R1 000 per month while the ‘Hot’ package offers an unlimited 1024Kb/s service for R3 000 per month.

According to Darren Smith, Managing Director of DigiChilli, “these are all burstable services up to double the advertised speed.” The service will be officially launched on 1 December 2009, but there is currently a pre launch special available.

“Register, purchase your December account now, and receive the rest of November free and gratis, as well as a further discount of 20% off the regular monthly package price for December,” said Smith. This means a user will pay R400 now, and have the rest of November for free with no caps. The 20% discount applies to all packages.

Additionally, if a subscriber refers 5 people that sign up, that subscriber will get the following month free, which in the case of this example would be January. Accounts can be purchased on a monthly basis and all accounts use dynamic IP addresses, allowing for 2 concurrent line connections. Users are responsible for their own router and ADSL access.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) connections and torrents will be allowed, but the service is managed, with business protocols taking priority. There are no rolling thresholds.

The ‘Mild’ and ‘Medium’ packages each come with one Google powered e-mail account using the @digichilli.com domain. The ‘Hot’ package can have up to 20 e-mail accounts associated to it.

The ‘Mild’ package for R500 will be a direct competitor to companies such as Axxess (http://www.axxess.co.za/uncapped.php), who offer a 384Kb/s uncapped account with a 5GB 10 day rolling threshold for R899 per month. The benefit of the Axxess uncapped express account is that one gets their full line speed (up to 4Mb/s) during off-peak periods.

On the high end of the uncapped scale, the ‘Medium’ and ‘Hot’ DigiChilli packages will compete with the likes of business uncapped services from OpenWeb (http://www.openweb.co.za/allhours_uncapped.php), who offer an all-hours uncapped ADSL with speeds of up to 4Mb/s, for R2 699 per month.

Update:

Technical details:

  • No thresholds – download all you can.
  • Burstable from 256Kbps, 512 Kbps and 1024 Kbps.
  • No rolling windows – go for it. We understand downloads.
  • The account allows for 2 concurrent ADSL lines to be connected at a time.
  • P2P and torrents allowed.
  • Dynamic IP address.
  • Use your own modem/router.
  • You must have a Telkom ADSL line and a router/modem for this.
  • This is a managed service, with business protocols taking priority.
  • Network conditions will determine the speed of P2P and torrents.

Great to see the jockeying for position in the bandwidth market. Smart MBA’s innovating to find an edge. Consumers win. Yay!

Are these uncapped accounts uncapped in the proper English sense? Or do they have those rolling usage caps applied? Value service either way, I think, the rolling cap strategy just gets my goat cos it’s basically deceitful.

Ye Andre, I couldn’t agree more – it’s about time we started seeing all this competition. I’m looking forward to what Web Africa are going to be rolling out. I’m still exploring these accounts, I want to get myself one so I can really get a good feel for it..

  3. John says:

Hey Chris, is this unlimited international bandwidth?

  4. Miguel says:

Yikes! I forgot how expensive broadband in SA is.

We pay £21 per month (~R250) for unlimited 20Mb/s broadband including telephone line. http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/broadband/pricesandoptions/max

  5. They freely admit capping torrents. And R3000 for a 1Mbps service? Please.

I want 100Mbps, no cap, no throttle, totally unshaped for R250 per month, including VoIP handset.

When South Africans catch up with the First World, I’ll get excited. But right now there is no First World Internet service in South Africa, due entirely to greed and a lack of legislation that makes monopolies illegal.

They, I’m not convinced about their service either to be honest, I took a look around the website and it seems rather amateur, which isn’t encouraging. What I couldn’t find is if you have to sign up for a 12 month contract or anything..

Here’s another uncapped solution that’s just hit the media – http://imod.co.za/index.php/2009/11/16/r399-for-uncapped-adsl/

Digichilli is a joke. Please dont sign up with them. Save yourself the hassle and go straight with Axxess.

  9. Chris M says:

I’ve only heard negative things about their service, but they are new, so I’m sure they’re adjusting and learning, sometimes it’s best to give these startups a chance and see what happens ..

Got something to say? Go for it!
