10 Scary movies for this Halloween

Halloween (also spelled Hallowe’en) is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31. The Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints are seen as the original Halloweens, whilst the Anglo-Saxon’s celebrated Winterfylleth, the begining of winter. It is largely a secular celebration but some have expressed strong feelings about perceived religious overtones.

The day is often associated with orange and black, and is strongly associated with symbols like the jack-o’-lantern. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, ghost tours, bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. ~ wiki

    Hey Chris,

Nice horror selection! Only recently saw Event Horizon… and boy, that is one messed up movie! Another classic new release rental you must check out is Trick ‘R Treat – bound to be a staple Halloween rerun.

  2. The Shining and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre chilled me to the bone.

I think Ju-on: The Grudge would be a good addition to your list. The Japanese know how to make a competent horror.

  3. Hmm, decent list. I must admit I have not seen any of the SAW series, maybe this weekend is as good a time as ever. I would also include “1408″ and you cannot forget about “The Grudge”.

  4. Brendon says:

I like your top two choices ;) Nice that you included IT. Saw that as a child and it freaked me the f***k out!

  5. Chris M says:

@Spling – Geez mate, the first time I watched that I was quite young, surround sound had just started being a big thing and I remember sitting there, hearing evil sounds creeping up behind me, still gives me shivvers when I think about it! Trick ‘R Treat.. wicked, I’ll keep my eyes open for that one, thank you :)

@Onelargeprawn – Ah yes, good point, I didn’t think of that one, it’s definitely a good one for the list!

@Conrad – SAW 1 is worth the watch, the others were rather predictable. @Onelargeprawn also mentioned The Grudge, it should have been on the list, agreed.

@Brendon – Thanks for your additions mate, appreciate it. IT – Truth me told, I don’t think I’ve seen it, but of the people I chatted to, most said they are scared of clowns ever since that movie :D

  6. Tony says:

I watched “The Uninvited” the other day … it has a few jumpy moments so it’s a good “initiation” for someone who isn’t into scary movies.

But I must say that The Ring is the scariest movie I have ever seen. I cannot bring myself to watch it again, or see #2.

  7. Chris M says:

Ah, I’ve not watched “The Uninvited” I don’t think, must write that one down. Truth be told, I’m not much of a scary/horror movie fan, but if it’s good, I’ll watch it. The Ring was pretty intense, I did enjoy that one!

  8. Rory says:

You got to check out “The Descent”. Great movie.

And check this trailer for a recent release in the states called Paranormal Activity:

They say its probably the most successful movie ever made (budget versus profits).

  9. Chris M says:

Thanks Rory, I’ll take a look in 5!

  10. Greg C says:

Hey Chris, personally I think The Hills Have Eyes should be on there before a few of those… Few movies actually physically horrify me (I guess the requirement for a good horror movie…), yet a few times in that I was quite shocked :)

Also, personally I’m into more of the thriller-type scary movies – all these monsters and killer video tapes are a little far-fetched :) Give me the original Scream anyday :) I prefer the more realistic scary movies (good thing you have The Shining on there, that movie is awesome!)

Got something to say? Go for it!
