Nokia N97 firmware upgrade

Yesterday, Nokia released a new firmware upgrade for the N97. Th9is is now v12 of the firmware, which is great news for all N97 users – we love new firmware upgrades!

The update is also visible via the ‘SW Update’ application on the device, but currently it directs you to use the PC to update. There is not much information given about the firmware apart from ‘Improves phone’s performance and brings you the latest features’.

The N97 features user data preservation, so you can update without the fear of loosing data. I will meanwhile look for a Windows machine to try and update.

  1. Nice. Nokia has a good track record of releasing software updates for their phones quickly following the initial release. I am no longer using my N97 though, have moved on to an HTC Hero, which is an Android based phone. It is very stylish phone, in fact the first of my phones that it being envied by iphone users. Finished in white with a capacative touch screen also like the iphone. The Android OS is also very stylish and user friendly. Kicks Windows Mobile and Symbian out the window I think. You need to check it out. Maybe Leaf Wireless the local HTC distributors will let you have one.

  2. It certainly sounds like people are raving a great deal about the HTC mobiles. I need to get my hands on one to do some testing!

  3. Weird. When I try to run the software updater for my N97 it says I have latest version already, but I clearly have version 11.x. It even says so:

    Nokia N97 (RM-505)
    Firmware version
    Current: 11.0.021
    Update: 11.0.021

hmmm… I wonder if it’s because I got a pre-release version or something? I’ll wait a while and see if it comes right after a few days.

  4. That’s strange Migs. I’ve not upgraded my side yet, but know two other gents who managed successfully. I’ll try do the upgrade this evening and will let you know..

  5. I believe nokia have released the next version of firmware upgrade, but the release hasn’t yet propgated to all their channels.
If i enter my product code in the “Can I update?” part of their website it says the latest version in 12.x, but clicking on the n97 from the list of devices to update on their website, they then tell me the latest firmware version is 11.x, so it’s conflicting.
I’ll just have to wait a bit for them to sort it out.

  6. I’m going to give it a try shortly :)

  7. Thanks.
How’d you come along? Same problem as me :)

  8. Yup, Nokia Software Updater failing once it’s downloaded :/

  9. Hi Miquel,

I have the same problem :( , have you found a solution for this problem yet.

    regards
    Ikram

  10. We had the same problem occur with an N97 in our office, but after a manual download of the Software Updater, it worked, just like mine..

  11. I haven’t managed to upgrade yet, but I think it’s because the updgrade isn’t available to all mobile networks.
I’m with Vodafone. I’m thinking that they perhaps they don’t support that version of firmware yet, so nokia’s update program won’t update my phone to a version of firmware unsupported by my network.
That’s the only explaination I can think of.

  12. I think you must be right Miguel, there’s no other explanation that I can think of either.

  13. I also got a N97 two days ago and is struggling with the same problem.Apparently all N97’s don’t have the same product code and the updates are released according to the different product codes.Has something to do with mobile service providers first having to OK the updates. One will have to wait until your turn comes or…change the product code. But how? This really sucks and what sucks even more is that I’m still on V10!

  14. Apparently Chris has manually downloaded the software and it worked. I have tried changing product code using NSS too to a product code that is from another region. Like Europe and Malaysia but both attempts failed giving the same result “No software to update”. Mine is RM-505 i wonder if this is the main factor because after successfully changing the product code it refused to update the firmware.. THIS PHONE REALLY SUCKS.. I have so much of problems with this. especially locking area. keyboard+screen and Phone lock.. i wonder why a compnay like NOKIA sells such crap.

  15. Ikram, you’re correct. I manually downloaded the Software Updater, it was 23.3mb if I remember correctly and once installing that, I was able to update my phone. However, Miguel tried this approach and it did not work for him..

  16. RM-505 isn’t the product code. The product code is on a sticker inside your phone, behind the battery. It’s a 7 digit number.
    Checkout http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update
However I don’t think the product code has anything to do with it, because I’ve checked my phone’s product code on nokia’s website and they say the latest update for my phone is version 12.x, however I’m still not able to update my phone beyond version 11.x using the nokia software updater tool. So there’s something else going on behind the scenes between the mobile networks and Nokia that I’m not aware of the allows them to restrict which phone is allowed which software update, based on what the network provider say they’re able to support, which kinda makes sense really.
It’s totaly understandable, if maybe something new to get used to.

This is probably something that will happen more often.

  17. Perhaps it is a something to do with the country and operator. Chris where are you connected? and Where is Miguel connected? But then we are updating through internet so it will know the IP? I have tried connecting VPN using an IP from Europe. Nothing worked.

  18. lol :) This is really getting involved.

    I’m in the UK.

I’m sure there must be something about this in some Nokia related forums somewhere on the Web. I haven’t looked myself, but that’s just because I’m too lazy to care :P

  19. Hello. i just got my N97 yesterday and i have same problem with u Miguel

    Nokia N97 (RM-505)
    Firmware version
    Current: 11.0.021
    Update: 11.0.021

iam from Turkey and this is an unlocked phone i mean i paid whole money for it. no contract.

cant update. damn. pls if u find a soluiton let me know. Thanx.

  20. I hope you make a faster multi-task phone in the next upgrade @nokia team

  21. Nokia N97
    Type: RM-505
    Firmware: 11.0.021
    Country: Netherlands
    Operator: KPN

The SW Update on the phone, and the Nokia website both list 11.0.021 as the latest available firmware. Wondering when if Nokia will skip the 12.x update and release the 20.x firmware instead.

  22. Hey guys. i gave back freezing, slow, crappy N97 back..what a bad experience phone was that? i hope Nokia developers get fired…its not a flagship phone. expecting a phone work DECENT(not awesome) out of the box is too much? N97 is FAIL with even its resistive touch screen. anyway my old E71 is still with me..its awesome. i also bought an iphone 3G…iam happy.

  23. You guys are quite lucky to already be on v11, I am still on v10 and cannot update.

  24. (JUST CORRECTED THE LINKS)It is the product code.Miguel is right,it is a 7 digit code behind the battery.I have successfully changed my product code and updated to V12. You need to use NSS to change the product code.

Application and info to change the product code is here: http://handphone-solution.blogspot.c…s-service.html

Product codes for N97 here: http://technician.via.my/2009/07/nok…e-listing.html

The person who originally posted the links used the following product code:
    0570817: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black
I used it myself and it worked beautifully.

  25. hey guys, has any other one tried this?? I´m working with V 10.2.012 RM 507 in Mexico. This device is giving us a lot of trouble, so we´re looking for solutions for all these bugs.
    Hope this works…

    Thanx

  26. I had the same problem and could not update from V10 to V12. I happened to reset the phone to factory settings and then tried the updater and the phone updated. It mat have just been a coincidence. I am in South Africa.

  27. Hi All,

I have a N97 which was locked on 3 UK, it took me 5 months to get the phone unlocked from UK n finally brought it to Pakistan but i have V10, it has a lot of bugs like camera doesnt work 15 mins after restarting n key lock etc etc.

I need to know will updating my firmware version to the latest availble lock the phone again?

  28. I believe nokia have released the next version of firmware upgrade, but the release hasn’t yet propgated to all their channels.
If i enter my product code in the “Can I update?” part of their website it says the latest version in 20.x, but clicking on the n97 from the list of devices to update on their website, they then tell me the latest firmware version is 12.x, when will the Version 20 be released in SA

  29. Another update already, geez! They seem to be releasing pretty often, was the platform that unstable initially?

  30. My phone froze and Nokia Cell Doc PE took it saying 3- 9 days to repair and then do not get back to you even if you call them. I only used Nokia for many years but the service is now so bad, that they are nothing but an insult to themselves.

I am still waiting for my phone and all Nokia Cell Doc PE can tell me is that it is lying in Jo’burg.

I now have an HTC as it is clear that Nokia do not care if their customers require there phones for business. Even when I asked for something to use there was no answer. Why deal with a company that is clearly loosing there focus. Obviously they are so successful that they do not need to satisfy their customers any more.

Have your say..
