The Democratic Alliance launched their social media campaign not too long ago and so far it’s been rather impressive, all things considered. I recently noticed some Adsense adverts, which the DA is clearly running..

Very interesting call to action isn’t that. I think it’s great to see the DA embracing social media and new age technologies to fuel their campaigns. I’m not sure I think the whole campaign and strategy is the direction I would have taken it in, as I do feel there are quite a few holes in it, but none-the-less, they’re reaching outwards, which is important and fulfilling a gap which has been here for years.
Here’s another Adsense banner I spotted running down the side of my blog..
click to enlarge – great banner!

The content of that adsense advert illustrates one of the fundamental flaws in the DA’s campaign; they have not told us, the voters, what they as a party will do for us should they be elected, but have rather centred their campaign on slandering the ANC. Look, I reckon I will vote for the DA primarily because I don’t want the ANC to get two-thirds majority, but it won’t be because I have embraced them as a party and their accompanying ideals (which I reckon 90% of DA supporters don’t even know what those ideals are).
I couldn’t agree more. Mike wrote a fantastic article on the very subject of the the DA saying what they’ll stop, but not actually telling us what they will do for us and based on that, it’s very true, there’s no fundimental reason or understanding for me to select a party other than the thought that allowing for a majority is not a good idea as a strong oposition party keeps things in check..
I’m very curious to see what sort of results the DA get since becoming so ‘social media’ aware.
I know Obama made use of all these technologies and was obvisouly very successful, but i’m not sure if the same applies for South Africa. Watched this open discussion between a couple of SA newspaper editors (Sunday Times etc) and they mentioned that only 10% of SA population is online users and how things like radio isn’t being used well enough.
Hope DA don’t depend to much on the social media thing and still makes use of the mediums that reach the ‘masses’…
just my 2cent…
Hey ChrisB, well naturally we don’t have such a progressive online industry here, so they won’t get a following anything near Mr Obama, but the main point is that it is another channel towards reaching people – Anthony, from the DA, has said a number of times that this is just a small piece of the whole picture and I’ve got no doubt that that isn’t a spot on comment.
The main thing is that even if they reach and extra 2000 people, that’s 2000 more than before..
