Should young men be using a facial moisturiser?

I grew up with a flawless skin, only to experience a pimple once in a blue moon, which is incredibly lucky, I know. Perhaps it was because my mother would race me off to the beach whenever I did get a pimple to allow the sea water to cleanse my skin?

Anyway, as we grow up, our skin gets weaker and more vulnerable do to the years of sun it faces and various other factors, such as stress, lack of sleep and so on. I had a discussion with some friends about a week ago, where we discussed whether gents should use a facial moisturiser or at least a cleaning agent. The opinions were very mixed, but we did all agree that it was probably a good idea to start doing so because in 5 to 10 years from now, we would all be in our mid thirties and would like to have a clean, unaged face.

Right, so I decided that I would turn to trusty old Mantality in search of something I could start using on my face. There were several facial moisturisers for men to choose from, but I came across the Men – U brand, which has the Matt Moisturiser, which is an ultra concentrate, oil and fragrance free.

man-u-matt-facial-moisturiser

The products description is as follows: Excessive oil production leads to a shiny complexion and skin looking oily. The mattifying properties found in the men-u matte moisturiser will reduce excessive oiliness and leave you with a healthy, glowing grease free face and the confidence to go with it. Great for urban environments where air pollution (including smoke in bars and restaurants etc) as well as heat tend to leave your skin dull, tired and greasy.

I quickly ordered my bottle, it goes for R180.00 and comes in a 100ml bottle 24 hours later. I’ve been using it for about a week now and have to admit that it is fantastic. Because I don’t get pimples and don’t have any wrinkles yet (thank heavens), I can’t say that I’ve noticed much on that front, but what I can say is that in this incredible Cape Town heat, it certainly keeps my face feeling a hell of a lot cleaner and cooler!

That said, I’m going to carry on using it indefinitely and enjoy feeling fresh – When I turn 35 and look fantastic, I’ll come back here and let you all know ;)

Order your bottle now.

A big yes on this one! I even would suggest a good old facial once every three months. Best is to use products suitable for male skin. I use Dermalogica. You ever go to London Chris, let me know I will point you in the right direction to a place that specialises only in male grooming and facials.

Mantality.co.za has some great London goods, so take a look around there mate.

Facial – Not a bad idea, I’ve never been for one, but honestly wouldn’t mind!

    Dermalogica is very very good!

They say you should be a “brand whore” and try different products – not just stick with one. Think of it as fragrances… you have different ones for different occasions.

  4. Chris M says:

Believe you me, I’ve tried several, so I agree with you, but if you find one which works, stick with it :)

Yay, another moisturising man. They should teach this stuff in schools – the skin do make up the man.

I’m a Dermalogica “devotee” and have been for years. I swear by the stuff. One look into my bathroom and well, I could compete with any woman out there. As for facials every three months – make that every month. It’s a pleasure that we should all enjoy – not just when botox eventually calls our name. Give one a try – you’ll love it.

    Here’s to looking mantastic! :-)

Gino – I couldn’t agree more, looking after yourself is so important in so many regards other than just the obvious.

Dermalogica is incredible, I totally agree with you and @Rustig on this one. I just wanted to try something new out and in the past, London products have served me really well.

Ya dude, my bathroom too, fragrances for summer days, fragrances for winter days and several hair products, a GHD and the list goes on.

I really think I should go for a facial now that you gents have mentioned it, sounds like a complete treat with a great gain!

Mantastic – Love that! Good one bro!

im not into using things like this, the cost and label generally put me off such things.
the only “product” ive ever used is nivea cream, and not this new ” nivea for men”, just the old school blue tub.

its not expensive and in my opinion its by far the best as far a face and body moisturising creams go….

  8. Chris M says:

    I know which one you’re using :)

The thing is, these brands do a little more than the one you’re talking about, they are concentrate and leave a very relaxed smooth feeling afterwards..

  9. carl pfutzenreuter says:

umm, i guess i dont need to look sexy enough to understand :P

  10. Chris says:

    You’ve gotta be shi**ing me???

I just don’t get it. Moisturiser for men? Next it’ll be mascara and tampons too.

C’mon guys – no need to grow a mangina. Be men, for god’s sake!!

    …!POW!…

  12. Di says:

Why, don’t men get oily skin? :) Some young guys especially need skin care products!!

  13. Chris M says:

Ye for sure we do, but in general I just think it’s a good idea to protect your face :)

  14. carl pfutzenreuter says:

sure, we all need to look after ourselves but there is a line, if you went into a guys bathroom and he had equal or more “products” than a women then id say that line has been crossed. there is just something about guys who over do it.

i think that sort of behavior falls under the “metrosexual” label, and im still to be convinced that that is not a fad….

  15. Chris M says:

Hahahhahahha. Well, if you’re saying “metrosexual” is a fad (which I tend to agree), then what line is the guy crossing?

  16. carl pfutzenreuter says:

i wound say the respect line…

fads are made for the social “sheep” to follow. and i have to say when women start deciding whats good for men then things go south. think about it, thats when guys start to have there hair straightened by girlfriends and where polo necks…

    EPIC FAIL

  17. Chris M says:

Lol, this isn’t anything about women deciding what’s good for men, it’s about men wanting to look after themselves correctly.

Bwhahahaha, I straighten my hair and I’m guilty of having my girlfriend help me do it. I too, wear polar necks bud :)

just cant picture you in a turtle neck…:P
