Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, welcome The Tube!

The stunning Nokia 5800 arrives on the scene towards the end of this year and boy oh boy is it going to be interesting to see what effect this has on the sale of iPhones.

Weighing in at only 109g, with measurements of 111×51.7×15.5mm, the Nokia 5800 is slightly smaller than the iPhone. It’s got all the usual bells and whistles, which I’m not going to bother going into. Controlled by an accelerometer and a proximity sensor, the phone is as much fun as it is professional.

In terms of memory, the Nokia 5800 comes with a card slot, which comes fitted with a 8GB card and is upgradable to 16GB. It comes with 81MB internal memory, 128MB SDRAM Memory and is powered by a ARM 11,369MHz CPU and running Symbian OS v9.4, Series 60 rel. 5.

GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE, 3G, WLAN, Bluetooth and USB are all the fantastic connectivity options the phone is armed with, so you’ll always have an option for getting online to check your emails.

Some other the other features include:

- 3.15MP Camera with autofocus, flash, video.
- GPS with Nokia Maps
- 3.5mm Audio jack
- Document viewer
- Built in Handsfree
- 406 hours standby time
- 8h45mins talk time

All in all, this is an incredible phone, which I’m sure the market is going to welcome with open arms! I can’t seem to get my hands on the expected price of this device, but if we think about it, there’s no way it’s going to retail for more than the iPhone!

    o man, that’s beautiful. i think a giveaway is in order… :)

  2. Chris M says:

Hehe, I honestly wish that I could get one to give away here! I’ll drop an email to a contact at Nokia and see what the chances are :)

  3. iPhonefans says:

Seriously i will bet you an iPhone 3G that this phone will cost more on prepaid then the 8GB iPhone 3G. Lol, vodacom has to pay %35 taxes when the iPhone comes in. Its a rip off for taxes, i import CD’S and the value was once $25 and they charged me R50 for taxes!

  4. Chris M says:

iPhonefans – Interesting, I stand for correction then, I just couldn’t imagine it costing more than the iPhone :)

  5. Haroun Kola says:

All these cool new phones coming in now, its amazing. I’ve just got the Omnia, on Vodacom’s birthday deal. I haven’t quite got the video blogging thing to work perfectly, but there’s hope yet :)

  6. Chris M says:

The Omnia looks awesome, how’s it going?

I reckon we’ll see some fantastic new mobiles as we enter 2009, can’t wait :)

  7. mikey says:

got this off the GSM Arena site, phone will probably cost more than an iphone, surprise surprise!!

It’s here folks – the first S60 fully touch-operated device has finally hit the shelves. Nokia kept up to their promise and released the handset before the end of November. Unluckily the price of the 5800 XpressMusic is still far from the 279 euro that Nokia promised when they officially announced the phone.

Currently the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic costs slightly more than 700 euro (900 US dollars) in most of the online shops. The mass launch of the device now will most probably lower the retail price closer to the estimated target just in time for Christmas.

  8. Chris M says:

Damn, that’s a big shame really, I didn’t think it would ever cost more than the iPhone!

900$ US is pretty expensive for a mobile device, quite scary to see these sorts of prices being thrown around whilst the most of the world goes slowly into recession..

  9. mikey says:

what were people thinking, nokia’s 1st touch screen phone more than half the price than any other touch screen phone, it had to be lie :(

  10. Chris M says:

    I concur mikey!

  11. Jamie says:

.. I can’t believe no one has questioned the 11GHz ARM CPU.. ROFL

It looks cool, I might even get one if Fring/Skype supports it. But I doubt it’s THAT fast..

  12. Chris M says:

There are so many mobiles being launched lately, that it’s hard to decide on which one to go for!

  13. Johan Venter says:

    The comment poster?

  15. Chris M says:

Grief, I missed that one completely, didn’t realise it was a paste of a message he received. Thanks Darryn for clearing that up for me mate :)

  16. Chris says:

    Well then…

After extensively researching the “5800″ and checking out a billion phone comparisons -5800 vs iPhone. I’ve come to the conclusion that it IS, in fact, a BETTER phone than the iPhone!
(No one would’ve thought this, hey?!) I was seriously looking into purchasing the iPhone, but then my attention was drawn to the 5800. It’s PERFECT -and they’ve even developed software to enable multi-touch on it! Granted it is in the early stages, but quite remarkable, considering that it was never -hardware wise- meant to be multi-touch. Anyways…main reason for the post : Just me quietly laughing at everyone who went on about the price for this device. Even when it was launched in the US and Europe it was ALWAYS cheaper than iPhone. Now, we can pick up an iPhone for +/- 3G 8gig R7699 ; 3G 16gig
R8699 as opposed to the 5800 for R4650. (Prices are in reference to today -so don’t freak out about this post 6months down the line! ;-)
    So there you have!
    Just an interesting observation….

  17. Darryn says:

Yea, I’m also keen to get a 5800 over an iPhone. Way overdue on an upgrade.

But I still feel like I must have an iPhone.

    Damn you Apple.

  18. Gerry Gibson says:

Can anyone help I was organising the menu and lost some of the sub routine facilities how do I recover these. Great phone.

Got something to say? Go for it!
