Oh how I love my new computer!

So about a month ago, I forked out some cash and bought myself a new computer. Due to excessive work loads, I just haven’t had a chance to move over to the new computer, until this evening!

I can’t explain what my old computer was like, seriously terrible! As a quick example, let’s say I wanted to create a new folder, I would right-click and select New Folder, then wait about 5 seconds, then start typing the name of the folder and wait for the name to appear, believe me, it was that bad! Another example, I would have to close down Firefox and all Instant Messengers in order to run certain applications!

Anyway, I’ve now got a new machine, with 2 gigs of RAM, 2.4ghz dual core AMD Athlon chipset, running on a lovely abit motherboard. I bought a sexy case and a new dvd writer, so I’m well chuffed. I will probably upgrade the RAM to 3gigs, I’d go for 4gigs, but alas XP can’t handle it, so I’ve read. Ian gave me his old GT7600 or something gfx card, so apparently I can play some games now :)

This is honestly the best thing I have done in a while and am completely stoked to be able to once again multi-task!

  1. Ian just had a 7600GT lying around? Now I feel really poor :( that is the same card as mine :P Yea XP can only handle 3gb RAM :( Maybe you can test your hand at some games again…If your not scared ;)

  2. Awesome bro… it’s about time!

Yeah 7600GT is a nice little gift. ;)

    Enjoy the system mate..

  3. Hehe, I wouldn’t mind installing BF2! Oh and we got Spore, which looks like a pretty crazy game! @ChrisB – this is the first upgrade since 2001, when I went to UCT, I think :D

  4. I read this blog entry today:
    http://geekmommashup.com/2008/09/03/hubbys-new-playstation-3-makes-me-sick/

It’s about a game called Call of Duty 4.

So then I read up a bit about it on Wikipedia, then headed over to take2.co.za to see if they had it in stock, and yeah they do. So I ordered the original one with its expansion pack because I want to start at the beginning and work my way up.

I’ve been watching some vids on YouTube on the game, and it looks good.

  5. Call of Duty 4.. yes, now that’s a game I’ve heard many people rave about!

Lots of my friends have been playing it for a while and are completely hooked. I’m sure you’re going to enjoy it!

  6. I was fortunate to have a mates xBox 360 for the weekend and his 82cm LCD TV, and i played CoD4 stukkend!! Single Player isn’t very long and i had it done in a couple of hours (actually the whole of Saturday)

It’s really good fun, even on console they’ve made the whole FPS thing possible…

I can definitely recommend it and apparently the guys are loving the multilayer too.

@ChrisM, ja bro u definitely needed that upgrade! Don’t know where u found the patience to work on those old specs…

  7. COD 4…Now that is a game. I finished that on Hardened in 2days. That game is hectic. I think i should get my hands on Spore. Now u can hook you pc up to you insane TV.Your making me bleak here…:(

  8. Hehe, much like you raved about CoD4, my flat mate is raving about Spore, sounds like an incredible game and the gfx are insane!!!

@ChrisB – Don’t ask, these things happen! Besides, I had to code Cobol ;P~

  9. @James – Hehe, ye I must get a cable and run one to the TV!

  10. Before I get COD4, I have to upgrade a bit. In July of this year I underwent a forced upgrade. IOW my motherboard from late 2005 vintage died on me.

But hardware has moved on from 2005, so I had to get a new m/board, new memory and a new CPU, and in the interim AGP slots have been discarded as a slow dog.

I opted for a new 160GB SATA2 hard-drive instead of getting a new PCI Express graphics card. So I’m currently using my onboard g-card which is not going to run COD4. My old AGP card which was perfectly capable of running COD4 looks up mournfully at me from its sudden and unexpected retirement.

Also my 160GB hard drive is now full. Full of what, you may ask? Full of mind your own business, that’s what!

So I’m looking to get a 1 or 2TB hard-drive – I would get a 20TB one if they existed. Actually, I’ve calculated that I will need something like a 1.2Petabyte drive to last me the rest of my life, but baby steps.

And then in addition, I will get some kind of cheapish PCI express graphics card and a new stylish black keyboard and mouse to go along with an even more stylish black 22″ LCD monitor with built-in surround sound and a sub-woofer and christ knows what else that looks flashy when I next walk into the showroom.

Chris, may I loan R10 000 from you? Just till next pay day? ;)

  11. Richard, out of curiosity, what AGP card did you have? My mate is looking for an second hand one to buy.The Gcard I’m looking at at the moment is the Radeon 4850. Its about R2000-R2400 but packs a serious punch!

  12. It’s an MSI RX9250-T128:
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=RX9250-T128&class=vga

    Going for R250 COD.

He can bring his own box along if he wants to test it before he buys it, because I don’t have a working m/board to plug it into.

I also have 1GB & 256MB of DDR ram from 2005. And a cd-writer, and cd players. And network cables and all kinds of computer junk going cheap to anyone who wants to take it off my hands.

Sorry for using this thread as my personal Classifieds, Chris. :)

  13. Hmm sorry Richard but thats the card he has at the moment I think. He has a 92xx so I am not sure. Thanks anyway though :)

  14. That took you a long time to sort out. I seem to recall putting it together one Suday along with my MICROSOFT OFFICE (ugh) Can I have it back please

  15. I don’t have the Office CD, I looked everywhere for a copy last night, as I needed to open up an .xls doc and ended up having to open it in wordpad and decrypt half the nonsense.

Ye, it did take me long enough, I’ve just never had a free moment :/

  16. @Richard, no problem, if you have things to sell and it’s related to the topic, I understand!

  17. @Chris: Did you try using Google docs to open your Excel spreadsheet? Or failing that, what about using Zoho.com?

They don’t do everything that Microsoft Excel does, but at least you can access the data.

  18. @Richard – Damn that’s a good idea for next time, sharp thinking!

However, haha, and get this.. The reason I needed to open the document, was to get my ADSL username and password, so I could get online :P~

  19. And you used Excel for that. Hmmmm. I guess you never know when you might want to create a pivot table on your passwords.

Me, I just use a text document for that kinda thing. Haha. :)

  20. On a serious note, I have more than one account. International and local, so I use it to plot usage graphs :)

I could use SASA I guess, but ye.

Have your say..
