Traffic monitoring webcams for Cape Town

A friend of mine popped me a tweet just now, pointing me to a website, which has webcams all around the place, including Cape Town Traffic Cameras, which allow us to see what’s happening with the traffic. I need to head to the Southern Suburbs at some point, so taking a look at Hospital Bend was my first glance:

What a useful website, well done MTN!

  1. Chris, a great find. One thing I find quite amusing is that their HTML looks hideous on that page!

  2. HAHA! I looked at that too! It’s a great service indeed!

  3. Very cool find indeed!
How does one use the 3gp link to watch it streaming? Or is it just stills as a viable option?

  4. I always wondered when SA would catch up and start doing this ;)
They’ve been doing it in the UK, and showing the images in news broadcasts for ages.
Here they also allow you to get live traffic situation info via your Satnav (GPRS) in the car, which is pretty kewl. I always thought if nobody is trying to get that going in SA already, it would be a good business opportunity ;)

  5. @Seagram – It’s a wicked service hey, about time! I’m not sure about the 3gp link yet, I’ve not tested that, but I’m pretty sure you could use an application to stream it..

@Eric – It’s wonderful to see South Africa doing things like this, so very useful for those people who travel quite a bit. Ah ok, is that what it can be used for, damn that’s useful!

  6. Which 3gp viewers are y’all using? Realplayer seems to blur badly…

  7. Ye, I’ve not had much luck. Wouldn’t the purpose be to use a GPS system to read in the images?

  8. This service has been around since 2001 on MTN ;-)

  9. That’s correct Lipska, what are you trying to say?

  10. a lot of the comments say its about time this was available, and they were wondering when sa would catch up. Mtn was the first company in the world to provide traffic cams on mobile phones and it was done years ago

  11. Ah for sure, but remember, there are millions of services on the Internet, keeping up with all of them is impossible so give the poor people a break ;)

  12. but where are traffic cams on the N1?? The N1 is the second busiest highway in SA after Jhb-Pretoria.

  13. Agreed, the N1 is incredibly busy and we definitely need more cameras along the road – MTN would be the people to talk to..

Have your say..
