The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was an event held at Max Yasgur’s 600 acre farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969.
The festival exemplified the counterculture of the late 1960s – early 1970s and the “hippie era”. Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend. Although attempts have been made over the years to recreate the festival, the original event has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in popular music history and was listed on Rolling Stone’s 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.
The event was captured in a successful 1970 documentary movie, Woodstock; an accompanying soundtrack album; and Joni Mitchell’s song “Woodstock”, which commemorated the event and became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. [via : WikiPedia ]

I had the original records (vinyls) of woodstock. Lost em somehow when i moved. They must be worth thousands by now.
Ah wow, that would have been so awesome!
Man BIG up 2 JT from TRR the new woodstock 10 logo! love the look of the plectrum/badge :P
Sheesh, it’s almost sacrilegious to feed off a cultural phenomena like Woodstock to try and recreate it for a local version. The whole reason Woodstock was such a breakthrough festival was that it spurned an entire movement; this festival is just another rock festival, except it’s riding on the fame and legendary status of the real deal.
Thanks but no thanks.
@ least they are making a festival.. they could name it ballsoup festival, but they would sell a lot less tickets.
its money @ the end of the day… but AFAIK the local woodstock fest is quite wicked.
You state “32 of the best known musicians of the day ……….”. with a link to what I asumed would be the best musicians of the day, but alas the link is to the upcoming concert!!!
@Ted – That’s a good point, I will update accordingly. Sorry.
@Rox – I duno, I think it’s pretty cool that someone is making the mission!
@Ruark – Ye, JT did a damn good job!
Dudes… (and dudettes) lets like get our knickers in a knot at the “sacrilegious” desecration of the movement that woodstock spurned.
This is Woodstock 10. There have been nine other Woodstocks in South Africa over the past decade. Hello? The only reason you may not know that is because the previous organizers were rubbish.
After W9 (which apparently would have been more aptly named Mudfest 9) Surreal Sounds decided to honor the memory of the a great festival by putting on a great festival.
Stop waxing lyrical and mourning the death of a festival you A.) weren’t born for, B.) don’t understand C.) because it was never meant for your generation.
Lean back, take a chill pill and go (or don’t) unless you have another “movement” to memorialize elsewhere.
I said ‘almost’ sacrilegious, and I didn’t say anything about desecration or mourning, or even that I understood or felt that the movement was being betrayed or anything like that.
All I said was that using the name of such a landmark festival for a typical rock festival for a generation far removed from the movement I might add, could be called ‘jumping on the bandwagon’. Like Ruark said, it sells tickets.
I don’t care what they call it, I’m sure it will be great, and kudus to Surround Sound for putting it together and not messing it up like the last ones, but it’s still a generic version.
P.S. It’s called having an opinion by the way, not getting my knickers in a knot. ;-)
Fair enough ;)
If we’re on the topic of pinching festival ideas… when can we see an imported Creamfields, or Global Gatherring outdoor festival?
btw Chris, wtf is with these icon thingies… I gave no consent to being a green and ge-suip bergie thing. :P
I want a festival with Fat Freddys, Cat Empire, Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. That would be epic!
lol @ JT… my gravatar looks like a constipated hulk
@LUCKYSOCKS – HAHA, you’re a green gesuiped bergie dude!!! :D
Is there not going to be a Woodstock 2009 for real??
I’m not actually sure Chani, I’ll see what I can find out for you..
