Apple iPhone South Africa
Ok, so I spent quite a while looking around and made a few phone calls. It would appear that the Apple iPhone is being launched in South Africa in September!

Download the iPhone price list for South Africa
I chatted to someone at Cellucity and was told that in a 24 month contract, the iPhone 3G 8BG would go for around R2000.00, but outside a contract, you’re looking at around R6000.00! I didn’t even bother asking about the 16G, I’m sure it’s a couple grand extra.
Not sure if the iPhone warrants such money, but we’ll see what happens!

Confirmed – cellucity are not the exclusive suppliers. All authorised Apple resellers are eligable to supply it.
Waiting list; http://www.newiphone3g.co.za/
:)
Jul 31st, 2008 at 11:58 am
Hi Steven, I’m sure there will be a few other suppliers, but for me, if I was going to spend that sort of money, I would feel more comfortable trusting somewhere like Cellucity..
Jul 31st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Chris the fact that you heard that this 3G i-phone R6000 is a myth…i work at vodacom and we let customers pre-order the handset on our website every single day
the i-phone cost R1500 cash and you can also get on a contract or an upgrade, while waiting in anticipation for the i-phone reach our land mark you can pre-order it on http://www.vodacom.co.za , and the minute the phone lands you will given a callback.
Jul 31st, 2008 at 11:36 pm
@leon – Fantastic! Thank you sooo much for popping in and giving me the correct information, I’m so tired of everyone giving false information!
So R1,500 cash and the phone is mine?
Jul 31st, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Hi Chris
If you wanna know more bout the features of this all in one handset you could go on http://www.apple.com
Theres one thing that’s been really pissing people off lately is the arrival of this legend in the making, the phone was supposed to have been launched on the 12 of july and up until today still to come
makes me wonder if the crime SA has anything to do with it, hijacks are a norm in this country.
Jul 31st, 2008 at 11:50 pm
I’m very well aware of all the features, I’m actually quite rehearsed on the phone, except for the darn prices. I have watched how it was meant to arrive in July, then August and now September only, I guess this is why there are so many rumours floating around, nobody knows who to believe!
Aug 4th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Excuse me for being fussy, but your pic alway says September 2007!
An insider on the inside is giving launch date around the 3rd week of August. My name is on list for a while now, so hang in there capt.!
Aug 4th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Well spotted HoTsTePPa! I took it off their site as far as I can remember, that’s brilliant!
Aug 5th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Hey guyz, a friend of mine works at RTT. They are the logistics company for MTN, and he said they’ve been sending the phones to all the MTN outlets. I then phoned MTN head office and asked them when it will be available and they told me they got legal issues, no date…
I heard somewhere that Vodacom’s launch date is around the 20th of August.
Aug 5th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Grief, that’s annoying. I can’t believe it’s such a mission to solve this whole iPhone thing, argh!
Yes, I also heard that date, let’s hold thumbs!
Aug 5th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Yep yep! Im beginning to think I should rather go for the HTC Diamond….checked it out and its really nice!
Aug 5th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Ye bud, that is a rocking phone indeed! I played around on one a couple of months back and it’s just peachy. I still want to wait a little longer for the iPhone though :)
Aug 5th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
22 August!
I could be wrong, but MTN is not in the deal… its exclusive to vodacom.
HTC Diamond, nice looking phone, but scratches easy, fingerprint happy screen. Was put off by the back plate being so cheaply built as well!
I’m still scratching my head as to what the TRUE iPhone alte
Aug 5th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
I also heard that Vodacom had exclusivity on this matter. Then again, I’ve been told so many different stories that it’s hard to know what is correct and what isn’t!
Aug 9th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Hey folks, I’m living in SA for a six months internship near Pietermaritzburg (I’m Dutch however) and I’ve been looking around a bit since the Iphone will be cheaper to buy here en take home (Hey, at least i’m investing in the economy?).
I talked to several people and today in PMB a friendly Vodacom employee expects the Iphone in stores within 4 weeks (”at least”). It will be exclusive to Vodacom. When I asked about the price she phoned around but could only reply about the rumours (inside the company though) that the phone would be about R6400 without contract. This would comply with prices in Europe. The delay of the launch date doesn’t suprise me; after all this is Africa… (not really a crime thing, more an issue of organisational skills ;) …)
I’m on the list, so next couple of days i’ll stay close to my phone.
Aug 10th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
R6,400.00 is far too much for a mobile device, I can’t believe that they’d do that to all of us, sickens me!
Thanks for the information Nick, it’s interesting to hear what everyone is being told :)
Aug 15th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
According to another site the following features are not available on the iphone. Can anybody confirm this? no MMS?
1. no memory card slot (you’re stuck with the built-in 8GB or 16GB)
2. no MMS messaging
3. no video recording
4. no using the phone as a Bluetooth modem, and no support for Bluetooth headsets
5. no cutting and pasting
6. no SMS forwarding
7. no option to turn off predictive text
8. no multi-tasking
9. no call duration logged in call records
10. no Flash support in the browser
Aug 15th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
All those are true. They’re working on an update to fix most of them.
Aug 15th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
This is great news, phew!
Aug 15th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Hey guys,
I just wanted to share the following message with you;
http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Cellular/4815.html
It’s not really good news, if it’s true, but truth hurts, right?
Aug 18th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
i picked up an iPhone when I was in the US and it rocks. i also found an application that almost removes need for MMS. it’s called palringo and lets me connect with all of my IM contacts on all IM services plus it has push-t0-talk (walkie-talkie style voice–actually much easier than typing SMS messages) and it allows one to send picture messages as well. and it’s really easy to use.
so when you get the iphone check out http://www.palringo.com
Aug 19th, 2008 at 12:54 am
@James – Are you back in South Africa now?
Aug 20th, 2008 at 8:30 am
Hey good people of South Africa. I just recently bought an I-Phone 8 Gig Unlocked for R3000.00 and other nokia cell phones at half the price. Drop me an e-mail at: fudge@xsinet.co.za if you’re interested
Delvery is garanted within 7 working days.
Sep 5th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Hey you guys,
I don’t know if anybody is interested, but I just got a sms from Vodacom (I guess) that they “acknowledge” my pre-registration for the Iphone and that they’ll soon contact me for further details.
This means they are either very late, or that news is coming..?
Sep 5th, 2008 at 11:46 am
I got the same SMS today. This has been the second one this week. But no one has contacted me yet.
Sep 5th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Interesting, I’ve lost touch as to what is happening with the iPhone, I must spend some time getting back up to date.. I got sick of the continual release date changes!
Sep 5th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
is it just me or does the ad at the top say Available September 2007, arent we in 2008 already? How time flies.
Sep 5th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
For those who say the iphone is going to be R2000 outside contract….HAHAHA if the UK Price on O2 is anything to go with best start saving.
http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paygo
Sep 6th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Theo – spot on, someone else noticed that as well! It’s going to be much more than R2000, there’s no doubt about that.
I reckon we’re looking at the R5000 mark at the least unfortunately :(
The iTouch goes for 3k!

Hey guys.
Just wana let you guyz know that I contacted vodcoms head offices yesterday and they told me it would be out wuthin the next 3 weeks!!!
Sep 10th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Thanks for the update Dan, appreciate you coming here and letting us all know!
Sep 10th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Guys i called directly to Vodacom warehouse(Jhb) and someone at the recieving side of the building looked on his form and said they are expecting their first batch of iPhones 1st week in October
Sep 10th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
geeeez, i can’t believe that we are still waiting for the damn phone – it better be worth it ;)
Sep 10th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Ye geeeeeez, I couldn’t agree more!
Sep 11th, 2008 at 9:07 am
Wow, i cant believe we still waiting for this phone, and if its more than 5000 then forget it, looks like the only way you can buy it cheap is on ebay from america, and once its launched in south you wont need to break or unlock it which reduces most of the features
Sep 11th, 2008 at 9:46 am
If you buy it on Ebay it will be classified as a grey import, and since its instore activation only on the new iphones as far as i know and you’ll still need to jail break it. I’d rather wait and get mine through vodacom, atleast i know i’ll get after sales service rather then importing something you wont get service on if it breaks and wont be covered by local warranty.
Sep 15th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Ya, well, I hope that it arrives soon – I just tried to get one cash from Amsterdam – at a bargain price of R12k.
Three weeks does sound promising, though – I’m starting to obsess over this phone!
Sep 16th, 2008 at 2:38 am
Damn that’s expensive! I have this horrible feeling that it’s going to arrive and be way more expensive than we are all thinking, which is going to be really dissapointing :/
I’ve checked out some great iPhone applications and as the days go by, more and more are being developed!
Sep 17th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
The iphone is available in SA :)….well if u have R9500 spare change lying around.
igear.co.za is selling check it out if u dare lol
I’ll wait for vodacom 2 give us prices haha
http://www.igear.co.za/category.aspx?categoryID=124&gclid=CJyo_7_P4pUCFQGrGgodbAt3eQ
Sep 17th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Geez, that’s a crazy price to be honest, the materials in the phone alone would allow you to buy several for that price, ouch!
Sep 17th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
I WANA KNOW WHAT THE REAL PRICE IS COZ I HEARD ITS GOING TO BE ABOUT R2500 ON A CONTRACT AND R6000 OUTSIDE A CONTRACT AND I HEARD ITS R1500 CASH FROM CELL-C
Sep 17th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Ams you about right on the pricing, unconfirmed though, but the Cell-C thing is a new one, its a vodacom exclusive through Vodaphone, unless Cell-C has some serious underground links with China on a price like that.
Sep 17th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Hmm the buzz keeps on growing, with the release on igear i guess that Vodacom will follow soon? We’ll see.. and wait of course…
Sep 17th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
I don’t think anyone will know the prices until the phone is officially released, it’s looking as simple as that..
Sep 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
got this off the igear site…..
8GB – R 9,499.00
WARNING : Other stores may be offering you “unlocked” iPhones that are R1,000 or more cheaper than ours. Whilst these are indeed “unlocked” they will be “bricked” or “killed” when you attempt to update their firmware to a newer version from iTunes. We are not going that route – our phones come included with the turbo sim which will work in conjunction with your own SIM card – the iPhone software is currently at 60% of its full potential and why wouldn’t you want the future updates? Our iPhones are fully warranted LOCALLY by ourselves and are able to receive ALL firmware updates from iTunes without being “bricked”. Also please note that the iPhone will work on all SA networks and is warranteed by ourselves and NOT Vodacom or the Authorised Apple dealers. We bust the myths around importing/unlocking HERE.
ONCE YOU HAVE PURCHASED YOUR IPHONE AND FOR VARIOUS REASONS DECIDE TO RETURN THE UNIT TO US, YOU WILL BE CHARGED A 15% CANCELLATION FEE. SHIPPING FEES ARE NOT REFUNDABLE. CANCELLATION OF ORDERS WILL BE SUBJECT TO MANAGEMENT DISCRETION.
Apple says that the $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) prices will be maximums in almost all of the countries in which it is offered; however, these prices represent carrier-locked prices, based upon a commitment to pay recurring voice and data fees for 18 or more months (effectively doubling the price over the period of ownership). Purchase through a carrier will mean a heavily subsidized phone for a hefty data contract or a hefty client contribution with a standard contract. Also limited iPhones have been earmarked for release into SA so it is expected that demand for carrier-free fully unlocked phones (such as this one) will be enormous.
Sep 18th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
found this link if you really cant wait and has a lot of money to spend, http://www.jump.co.za/product/apple-iphone-3g-with-gps-8gb-11034055.htm
Couple of online sites in SA that already are selling the phone but at that price i’ll wait.
Sep 18th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
ill settle for the 8GB on a vodacom contract.
these cash prices are insane!!
Sep 18th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Agreed, completely insane. If people actually spend this amount on a phone, they’re silly. Based on what the phone actually has to offer, it’s no more than one half the price.
Sep 18th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Hey people i have read all your replies and the only person who i can say is close and knows what they talking about is Michael …….there rest are talking on mere speculation and assumption. we havent received any feedback as to when the phones landing the country as yet, but what i can tell you is that its still under testing as there is no APN’s for the handset as yet. So try to avoid the whole broken telephone game and mostly ANDIE lol…..id also like to thank you on behalf of vodacom for your utmost patience. And yes it will be worth it, Trust me or not it was always up to you anyway lol
Sep 19th, 2008 at 12:36 am
Hi leon,
Thanks for popping in, why not leave us some accurate information mate?
Regards,
Christopher
Sep 19th, 2008 at 9:09 am
With people like Leon working at vodacom that enjoys criticising speculations on a blog and has nothing better to offer in terms of constructive information, no wonder we waiting on the phone.
Dont know what all the testing is he is going on about when half of the rest of the world is already selling and enjoy this phone…thats what software updates are for.
Sep 19th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Hi Theo, look, I do appreciate Leon’s comments, but I do have to agree with you, what’s the point of coming in and mentioning a couple things, none of which have any relevance. He did mention that this comment has some relevance, but that really doesn’t help us all that much unfortunately, it’s still speculation in my opinion..
Sep 19th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Hi,
On my ongoing quest to find the ultimate and bestpriced iPhone I also came across this site;
http://www.ordermate.co.za/productinfo.aspx?productID=IPHONE-8GB
They offer the iPhone 8GB for 6,500.. but whether this is the 3G? Many people forget to mention. If it is, this price isn’t that bad. And it’s unlocked btw
Sep 19th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Interesting indeed. Is it 3G, because if it isn’t, then I’d say it’s definitely NOT worth it..
Sep 19th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Hey
While we are idly waiting for the iPhone to knock our socks off and yakking on blogs, has anyone played with the Samsung Omnia?
I’ve got a friend who works for Samsung who say’s its a much better phone. But she’s paid to say that:)
Sep 20th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Conspiracy people. An insider advised that Vodacom want to maximise the launch by bringing it closer to the festive sales. Other manufacturers have also applied pressure to delay the launch until their new handsets get here in Q3. I have actually seen a Nashua mobile – Vodacom unit in test back in July already. Vodacom could have done better.
Sep 21st, 2008 at 1:57 am
@Haroun – I’ve not seen the Omnia yet, as far as I know, I will have to take a read about it and perhaps make a blog post :)
@John – That doesn’t surprise me, in terms of marketing and maximizing the sales, it would make sense to release it close to Christmas. Honestly, my opinion is that the phone isn’t that incredible, especially for the price that everyone is assuming, therefore, releasing at a stage where every tom, dic and harry will buy it makes sense, because the minute it’s out, I’m pretty sure people are going to say it’s over rated! So if they sell thousands of units all at the same time, it doesn’t matter if people say it’s over rated, because they’ll all be sold ;)
Sep 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Hey guys apparently Botswana has the iphone at hifi corporations it goes for 2300pula, if vodacm does not reduce its prices, the iphone will sell miserably in South Africa!! It will all be a huge loss
Sep 21st, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Thanks Chris, will be cool to get your take on it. I played with a buddies older iPhone which he got from the states, very nice :)
Sep 21st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
That’s really interesting @George, 2300 pula = 2 768.19099 South African rands, which is a great deal lower than my other sources say!
@Haroun, I’ve had a quite play on one, when I was working in the mobile industry, but I would need some more time to test out all the features, including the huge quanity of iPhone applications which are coming out. I see the value more in the applications than the actual phone though..
Sep 21st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
The coolest app I came across was for scratching music from Mixmeister. Check it out at:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284764930&mt=8
If I eva get a iPhone, this will be the first App I get:)
Sep 21st, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Ah, I’ve not seen that application, must take a good look. I think music sharing will be massive once the masses get their hands on the iPhone 3G :)
Sep 21st, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Here’s some good news – http://www.simon.co.za/iphone-arrives-in-south-africa/
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 8:47 am
duuuudddeeeee :) damn its simon.co.za is right, mean this blog has finally come to an end, if not im sure we’ll all still be around till xmas haha.
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 am
@ Chris M;
I went to the Vodacom store in PMB again yesterday and spoke with one of the people there, and they said that they would definitely arrive Tuesday (tomorrow, 23rd). She couldn’t say if they’ll be sold right away, or after a day or 2. She also said they’ll cost about 6000 for the 8gb and 7000 for the 16gb, but she wasn’t sure. Other stores were all talking about this week or next week. Anyway they’ll call if they got it, or I will if I don’t hear anything.
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
Just got an email from apple, i think many probably get these, but it says Iphone 3G is coming September 26. i’m sure we’ll start seeing things happen this week, not sure if they doing a world release on the same date for couple of countries, either way im sure we’ll get our dirty pawns on them phones by the weekend.
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 11:17 am
I got the same email Theo, just as a notification of your response came into my inbox :)
http://www.apple.com/za/iphone/buy/?cid=CDM-EU-2011
My contract comes to an end in November, with Cell C :(, that’s when I’ll be getting a new phone, will be interesting to hear all you early adopters take on these phone. Especially if anyone can tell me the diff between Samsung Omnia and the iPhone.
Got a girl-friend who’ll beat me up if she sees me with the iPhone, she works for Samsung :)
I mainly want to do video blogging.
Hooray for Apple
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 am
Haroun if u check out http://www.phonegg.com/Samsung/SGH-i900-Omnia-16GB/Samsung-SGH-i900-Omnia-16GB.html you can pretty much get the spec differences, also a phone to take into consideration will be the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1.
As for me im a huge apple fan, so i’ll stick to my original choice in getting the iphone, mainly cause of the app store.
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am
hey guys,
if you looking for any info/specs/reviews on a mobile, go to:
http://www.gsmarena.com
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Official launch: http://imod.co.za/index.php/2008/09/22/the-official-iphone-launch-in-south-africa-26-september/
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Where do you get that info from Chris???
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Thanks @Theo. Instead of technical specs, which are hard to read for my limited brain capacity, I’d like someone who knows and who has played around with them all to write about which phone is better for video blogging.
When I grow up, I want to be a video blogger :)
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Just phoned all around….. Launching on the 26th and believe it or not only 40 iPhone’s per store…. Ganna have to get there early :( plus only bout 7 white models! And vodacom has recieved over 20000 preorders.
Sep 22nd, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Nevermind, I found it @Theo. The site you sent me to tells me that the iPhone doesn’t have video recording. That does it for me.
My next phone won’t be an iPhone :)
Happy phoning everybody else.
Sep 29th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Vodacom is the biggest damn thieves? They want r 6800 for the 8gb. Wat happened to steve jobs price of $199 ? Anyway i can complain 2 apple directly? Maybe steve shud know abt the destruction of his brand
Sep 30th, 2008 at 12:00 am
I’m writing this on my brand new iPhone and let me be the first to say what an amazing piece of equipment it is. I am absolutely smitten.
Being as excited about the arrival of the iPhone as the rest of you, I naturally read, and continue to read, many of the forums and comments on the iPhone. And I’m saddened and just a little annoyed at the negativity that seems to prevail among us South Africans. Are we really just a nation of sissies and moaners?
Perhaps the most annoying is that most people leave fuming comments based purely on ignorance. First off, the iPhone costs around R6500. Expensive, yes, but not much more so than an HTC with similar functionality. Furthermore, R6500 is the pay-as-you-go/cash price. I recently tried to purchase the phone in Amsterdam for cash and it cost approximately €1000 or R12000. I couldn’t even find a place willing to sell the iPhone for cash in the UK, you could only get it on a contract with O2. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe that to get the phone for $199, you have to get it on contract with AT&T. This pricing is no doubt to make Apple and the associated service providers stinking rich, but it is by no means limited to this wonderful country.
I got the phone on Friday on a contract that is similarly priced to Vodacom’s ‘Talk xxx’ contracts and roughly R2000 pay in for the phone. A little costly, yes, but not unreasonable considering what one gets – the iPhone truly is an amazing phone.
In future, please do a little reading before doing the little ‘this country is out to get me dance’.
Sep 30th, 2008 at 8:03 am
Adam
thanks for setting things straight, i’m going to go get mine as soon as i get my pay hehe, why do alot of people seriously think they can pick up an iphone at $199 without contract which is cheaper than an 8Gb touch ipod at $229 (without GPS and the phone function), stop complaining already, buy a touch ipod or go get urself some other phone brand (HTC), i for one is willing to support apple on this product.
Sep 30th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Good on you, Theo;) you won’t be sorry – I haven’t been able to put the phone down since I got it. They predict shortages in the ‘immediate future’ so I’d recommend giving your nearest Vodashop a call. Enjoy it.
Oct 1st, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Hi Everyone,
Not to burst everyone’s bubble but all this hype about the iphone is all it’s ever going to be … the phones are actually really crappy! I’ve had an iphone since January. I bought it in SA and was one of the first people to have one and let me tell you, I was really disappointed! If you want a fancy, touch camera then great, but there are a lot of features that are missing from it. For example, you can’t forward sms’s. That is just one, but there are hundreds of little things wrong with it. And the ‘oh so cool’ touch screen begins to get very annoying when it keeps pressing buttons you didn’t want to. I haven’t used my iphone for the past 3 months and it’s now gathering dust in my safe. Do yourselves a favour and really weigh up whether you’re prepared to sit on a waiting list agonising over a product you may well be disappointed with! Just my opinion …
Oct 1st, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Does it have all those shortfalls stated above though? No mms, Gps does not work for SA, no video recording, no flash, no bluetooth?
Oct 10th, 2008 at 12:23 pm

I got mine on Monday and im loving it, best ipod ever, so yeah its got no mms but seriously does people actually use it that often? that’s what email is for and my email sync perfect. there are voice recording software on app store, adobe is in development for a flash app not like i go onto flash sites much cause its annoying to wait for a site to load, Safari is amazing to surf the net with, only complains i do have is the lack of suppose that apple has over here, Google earth (GPS) doesn’t have map support over here and the app store has no games. and as for taking pics, go buy a digital camera for that. the 2mp cam isn’t all that bad in bright daylight. Its probably also the only phone with the biggest application support at the mo, so if apple hasnt thought of an app yet im sure someone out to make a buck will.
The bluetooth support isnt too great on it, cant sync my mac with the phone via blutooth, but all in all im pretty happy with this 2nd gen phone, keep in mind apple is new in the phone business and already created a stir in just 2 years.

hi, i wanted to suggest to people in south africa to get their iphones rather from amarica or europe.the latest one out now in the uk is the apple iphone 3g s.it is voice controlled.the iphones sold in the uk work fine.once you have gotten them unlocked or jailbrocken you can use it anywhere in the world.
so south africans if you have family in america or england ask them to buy you one and then have it unlocked so that you can use it in south africa.i am getting one for my brother…. :}

how would i go about getting the phones unlocked? I have a friend that will be sending me quite a few iphones from usa all brand new. I’m also thinking of selling them. At a cheaper price than what its being sold at in our stores obviously. But having it imported would mean that I’ll have to have them all unlocked?
Some help would be great. :)
thanks

I have the apple iPhone 3Gs 32G and must say, not impressed at ALL, it has no GPS driving direction maps for SA, sure, it points out where you are, but that’s it, it doesn’t compare to the Nokia N97 I have, which is exactly similar to a proper garmin gps with voice commands etc. Also, the camera doesn’t have a flash, that sucks and you can’t change your ringtones, due to iTunes not being supported in South Africa! If I’m wrong, please anyone help, as I’m annoyed with this iPhone.

Interesting, I’m also an N97 user.. The N97 is pretty cool, still exploring all the features and coming to terms with everything. Not too sure about the features you’ve asked about though..

Sue: I can understand your frustration, especially with Google Maps that do not know South African roads. I suspect that that’s not going to change in a hurry, either. I use my iPhone 3G (from Vodacom, unlocked) in London and the directions are amazing – but I still believe in using a proper Garmin or Tom Tom GPS for driving.
The ringtones are a different sotry: there are ways of creating your own ringtones from songs in iTunes and then getting them back onto the iPhone with a little trickery – it’s not complicated and you don’t need to download anything. I’m not going to go into detail here. Googling iPhone and Ringtones should point you in the right direction.
At the end of the day, the iPhone is an awesome phone if you have a little patience and a desire to tinker a little – you can achieve some amazing things. Stock standard, though, the iPhone is still a pretty cool way of keeping a phone, MP3 player and email all in one device. The camera is a little crappy, though.
