MXit for iPhone

I’ve heard a great deal of people asking whether MXit will work on the iPhone or if there is already a version in development. After getting rather annoyed at the continual comments and questions, I decided to take a look for myself and here are my findings:

Apple iPhones are fantastic, however, they do not support java applications. Based on the fact that iPhones run Mac OS X, it would be possible to run a Java Virtual Machine or Emulator, but I have not tested this yet. It would make me think that if you could run a virtual machine, that you would be able to run MXit for your computer on the virtual machine. The iPhone does support GPRS and EDGE, which is one side of the problem resolved at least.

Here are two findings I found by doing some research:

  • The version of MXit for the i-Mate JAM:
    • This version may allow you to use the iPhone’s touchscreen and some of the more advanced MXit features. This version of MXit may appear distorted when run on the iPhone because of it’s 320 x 480 display though.
  • The version of MXit for “other” phones:
    • If the version of MXit for the i-Mate JAM doesn’t work on the iPhone, the version of MXit for “other” phones should at least allow you to use the most basic MXit features.

The problem I foresee, based on my experience working at Yeigo Communications, is that the only way to really allow for MXit use on an iPhone would be to create a whole new version of MXit.

When iPhones become readily available in South Africa and this whole jail-breaking situation is resolved, I’m sure that the MXit team will think about, but until then, I guess the iPhone/MXit fans will have to wait :/

I am a prospective iPhone buyer and a mxit addict, so I have been investigating the idea of mxit on the iPhone.

Sun – the creators of JAVA (The platform which mxit is written for) are in the process of creating a JAVA app for the iPhone. Apple has a few gripes with this, as theoretically, any JAVA application for iPhone can be made available and, if the app doesn’t follow the strict conditions as laid out by the iPhone SDK, could damage the phone or user experience. So until Sun releases a Java app, and until Apple allows it to go public, short of jailbreaking one’s iPhone, current JAVA-based editions of Mxit will NOT WORK.

Perhaps the mxit team should look at downloading the SDK and creating a new version of mxit using the iPhone SDK. It is relatively easy to create iphone apps – for any programmer. basic C language skills are all that are needed. the SDK includes an IDE. Hint Hint Mxit… get cracking.

No emulator will get Mxit on your phone legally.

in the meanwhile, with the iPhone 3G arriving soon, and multitudes using the old iphone, people could look at creating a Gtalk account with google (talk.google.com) and then navigating to talk.google.com on their iphone where they can add mxit contacts by adding new contacts with @mxit.co.za . It’s just like adding a mxit contact, albeit on gtalk, and it works. This is because both services are ‘jabber’ based. It does mean re-inviting all your previous contacts though.

    Hope this has helped.
    thanks

Hay guys… who cares if mxit dosent work on the iphone currently…. i have an iphone.. and there are still alot of unknowns about it… as most of the applications…only work in the countries where the phone was developed!
but im not here to cause anyproblems… what i can say however… is that these guys that devoloped mxit are working there asses off.. and im sure alot of us dont expect any development to happen anytime soon as the phone has not even been released in sa yet.. but atleast they are looking in to the development of it! So big up’s to you guys keep up the good work… just dont let us down on the functions.. now is the time to blow us away with your genious!

  3. Chris M says:

@Rayner, I agree, the iPhone is still new to most people here, especially seeing that it has not been released yet! The minute it’s officially released, I’m pretty sure all the applications will fly in and everyone will be satisfied.

  6. chris E says:

    but wait???
” albeit on gtalk, and it works”
    what does that mean? albeit?

  7. Chris M says:

    It means….”given that”.

  8. chris e says:

oh lol ty. still trieng if the thing works but they cant accept me as contact?

  9. CP says:

    Hi all

Since i posted that information I have purchased an iPhone. Great phone. Loving it. Hope my guide up top helped.

Instead of using Gtalk all the time, I’ve downloaded an app galled palringo – and added my gtalk as an account. gives you an easier interface to work with. Give it a try.

Otherwise, I have emailed Mxit and they have confirmed that they are working on an iPhone Mxit app which should be ready soon. Two cheers to mXit.

    Peace

  10. chrise says:

Yes but you must take in reacon what mxit’s soon is or your soon. by the sound of what i heard from one persone is “mxit iphone user is only about 5000 ppl so it would be crazy to develope a version just for a 0.1 of all mxit users”… you say waht you think….

  11. Rayner says:

Hi guys if your interested please read my comments to the mxit team… and see their reply!

“When will mxit be available for the iphone?
As there are no sites that actively discuss anything
And most of the sites don’t get updated…

Could you shed some light for a poor old mxit fan?”

    their reply

    “Good Morning,

We are busy with a version for the iPhone. It is not known yet when this will be released, they are looking at the first quarter of next year ?

    Regards,
    MXit_Team”

  12. d0x says:

You can’t seriously tell me that there isnt a single Objective c programmer out there who doesnt use mxit and has already made himself an app for it for the iPhone.
Its not amazingly complicated but there is no way i’m buying a mac just to write my own mxit.

But as for “what i can say however… is that these guys that devoloped mxit are working there asses off..” uhrr, negative. But as it’s their service we are reliant on them so hopefully someone comes up with a solution soon.

good luck to all other iPhone users :P

  13. Chris H says:

OK, i seriously HATE touch screen phones! My Mom got that Touch Diamond and MXit on a touch screen is horrible!
iPhone has a lot of problems (so I heard)..
    What Would You Pick?

    *Samsung Omina* or *Apple iPhone*?

  14. Chris M says:

I think I would go for the iPhone hey, based on what I’ve heard it sounds like a good phone, it’s just darn expensive though :/

  15. Chris H says:

    Yeah bra !!!

  16. rayner says:

hay guys.. im starting to get really pissed now.. they still havent released a version now for the iphone.. i think this is bad… they keep updating their current versions.. but screw everyone else… is the point not to cater for everyone?……

  17. rayner says:

hay… just thinking about it.. who do we actually blame here? mxit???? or apple?

    or both?

dumasses! they always have to complicate THINGS!!!!!

  18. death-igniter says:

just go to the app store and search for mxit.
    its for free
the emoticons will take sum tym to get used to as they are alot different to the normal ones

  28. Marko says:

Alternatively, if you already use Google Talk or any other Jabber account, simply add your Mxit friends in the format 27xxxxxxxxx@mxit.co.za replacing the xxxxxxxxx with their number (excluding the leading 0).
