The chair, as well as another chair design and a table will be part of a show in Paris at the prestigious Emmanuel Perrotin Galerie. The show will be from October 21st 2008 until January 10th 2009. The chairs will be available in a few colors and only 4 of each will be sold. The chair represents the love between a woman and man.

that is a GOD AWFUL piece of design!

  2. Chris M says:

Agreed! I saw it and just laughed!

It’s definitely not pretty…but at least it’s interesting. Even so, I don’t think I’d like to sit on it! :-|

I like the concept more than I like the design. The notion of a chair with legs that LOOK like legs is pretty cool.

However, some of the problems I have with the actual execution of the thing are:

The front legs are on tiptoes. It gives me a feeling of distress to look at the chair, because I imagine (and will continue to imagine subliminally even if I try to put it out of my mind) placing my weight on someone’s strained, stretched legs. Even just looking at that thing standing there like that makes me think, “Haai shame, wanneer gaan hulle vir die arme gemartelde stoel toelaat om uiteindelik platvoet te staan?”

The lines lines is not visually integrated. Think of the design of a car body. These days, they take the line from the sides of the cars — door-frames, the entire shape, and sweep them through and all the way round to the lights at the back. That sort of approach is lacking here. The very traditional stacker-chair seat shape neither integrates well nor contrasts sufficiently with the wacky legs to make this a “winning number”, IMO.

Incidentally, I don’t think the notion of a chair with feet is really that novel. I recall seeing similar things this in interior decor magazines in the 1970s. And AFAIK Idi Amin had a marble toilet in the shape of a giant hand.

I tried to edit my typing mistakes, but the text block threw a bunch of errors every time I tried, and eventually the seconds had ticked away. So forgive me.

@Louisa – interesting is the perfect word!

@Tania – What a great analysis, wow! I looked at it, moved away from it and looked at it again and it does seem to grow on me. Although I’m into a totally different style, I can see that this will be a pretty big hit! I don’t see it winning awards though, as you said, but I guess it’s worth giving him credit for being relatively innovative!

It’s strange, the edit used to work and has now stopped :(

    i like it..totally different!!

  8. Chris M says:

You’re right, it’s totally different indeed! I’m not too much of a fan of the style, but I’m sure there are hundreds who will love it :)

Got something to say? Go for it!
