Facebook thinks it knows my friends!

As the days go by, Facebook evolves more and more. With the information they have at hand and the relationships between users, it’s very easy for them to spot commonalities and provide us with useful little additions.

The latest edition is the ‘People You May Know’ feature, located on the right hand side of the home page. This feature clearly draws comparisions between yourself and current friends, looking for connections and then provides you with a list of people, who ‘it’ thinks you might know. Now, obviously it’s not always right, but I’ve stumbled across a couple people through the list who I in fact do actually know.

Facebook is watching us

These sorts of features show us just how much information Facebook has, as well as makes me wonder what will come next. At some point, with all the brain power at the Facebook headquarters, something new and magical will appear!

Ps. Yes, I’m back on Facebook after leaving for several months ;)

Ha! I got a blog post of the same thing in draft waiting for Monday to post!

I think its brilliant. You will be surprised how effective it is. Last week i checked it out and managed to find friends that i haven’t chatted to since school. Alot of Bosch Boys added last week. Very cool feature i think. Also how scary the whole 6 degrees of separation goes. You see a “potential friend” with ppl that you know who happen to be their friends, and it will be some of the most unlikely ppl that you find know the same person. a guy from school, a guy i met in obs and a chick that i went to maths tuition with in 1997 have a common friend.

Hehe, I’ve been meaning to post this as well and finally found the time to do it :)

Absolutely, I’d love to actually hear how effective it is in terms of pushing growth, because it’s a great idea indeed!

I’m sure they’re going to release more and more clever ways of connecting people, I mean that’s sorta the whole point of things from their side :)

I saw that the other day as well, it is kinda cool, except that nearly all of them are old school ‘mates’ who were never really proper friends then anyway, lol.

    Still, clever feature.

LOL at the ‘mates’ – It’s very very true.

But to be honest, Chris and I were never really close at school either. We never had any issues with each other and extended the basic civilities, but never hung out. Not that we do now, but the net has sort of opened up a whole new level of communication for us.

Even though, its me commenting on HIS blog and him rarely commenting on my blog ;)

FB has had that effect for me with a lot of ‘mates’ actually. I find myself chatting to ppl I wouldn’t normally bother with and has opened me to different opinions in some cases. (And im HIGHLY opinionated!)

You’re right hey, and I also have some friends I made via Facebook, lol, who again I may not have ever connected with in ‘real’ life.

As long as the randoms don’t turn into annoying freaks on me, then it’s all good. It can get a bit much when you get long essay messages from people you went to junior school with… who were a few years above you, for instance.

The cool thing about communication via the internet, is that you are given the freedom of choice to respond or not.

Many times, I ignore IM messages because I am just not in the mood for some ppls agging. It’s so easy to postpone a response to an email and even an sms. It gets on my nerves when ppl call me though for idol matters.

To me, calls must be to the point.Strictly business. I honestly dont wanna know what you did last night via the phone. If you have to tell me, send an email!

you will never succeed (or get rich) if you waste your time chatting on the phone. I don’t know in which movie i saw that, but i think its the Godfather

Totally, and one thing about FB is that it does give us a fair bit of control, despite the privacy issues that sometimes crop up.

Spot on, it’s wonderful how old ‘mates’ are able to now connect and become more than just two people occasionally saying hello during the school day.

I think LinkedIn is a great place, it’s moved in leaps and bounds over the past few months when everyone was so captivated by the movements of Facebook. I’ve started to spend more time on LinkedIn than Facebook purely for the fact that it’s actually beneficial!

Got something to say? Go for it!
