The water froze the instant the wave broke through the ice. That’s what it is like in Antarctica where it is the coldest weather in decades. Water freezes the instant it comes in contact with the air. The temperature of the water is already some degrees below freezing point.
Just look at how the wave froze in mid-air!!!

Very hectic pictures indeed..
Just struggling to understand how a wave can break through the ice…
Looks more like glacial ice, which is in constant motion, runs down from the mountains like water and eventually breaks off into the sea. at no stage is it actually liquid though, but it moves as such.
very cool never the less – we wont see this in the near future, the rate at which these shelves are melting is scary
Ye, I was thinking about that too, seems a little strange for a wave to roll in and then all of a sudden freeze over, temperature fluctuations of that degree wouldn’t be possible.
Ye mate, once in a life time collection of pictures indeed!
I REALLY wudn’t be surprised if this is staged.
Afterall, Iv seen a ski slope in Dubai!!!
AND the pic of the flag on the moon has 4 shadows!!!
Hehe, ye there is a chance that this is nonsense, I couldn’t agree more, but I’m hoping it isn’t because it’s truly amazing :)
Ooooh..that’s beautiful Chris :-)
Stunning pics hey Louisa! How have you been babe?
I’ve been absolutely brilliant Chris! Had a couple of rough days this week but other than that smooth sailing all the way.
How have you been hun?
You must be getting excited about the blog awards by now (I voted for you of course!)… ;-)
Ah that’s fantastic babe, I’m really glad you doing so well!
I’m well thanks, just extremely busy these days, perhaps a little more than I would like to be, but I’m working so very hard on building a future!
I’m very excited, it would be a dream to win, but will be happy to just attend the ceremony and meet some inspiring people. Thanks for the vote babe, I really appreciate it!
Keep well hey and all the best for the future movements! *hugs*
Oh don’t be so modest – we both know you’re going to win… :-P
Hope you get some time in between to take it easy and have some fun too Chris.
Oh yeah, and please don’t use the word “movements” in the same sentence with me. If I end up having to move AGAIN this year I think I might sell everything I own and take up RV living or something. I’ve decided after filing and ironing, packing and unpacking every single thing I own is my third least fun think to do …ever.
Do you know where the awards ceremony is going to be and when?
Lol, well yes, that’s the idea, but it’s not as simple as that unfortunately :P
Ye, heading out for some drinks with Riply shortly, should be good, need some ocean breeze and some alcohol ;)
Sorry babe! hehe, you still moving around like mad? Where you located atm?
Yes, UCT Tennis club, 2nd April, 7pm :)
I was in Belville/Durbanville for about a month and a half…and now I’m in Table View. If I make it to the end of the month it will be a month and a half here too. ;-)
Seriously though, this place is MUCH nicer – so it was a move in the right direction for me at least, and I don’t have any immediate plans to leave again very soon.
Is the award ceremony open to everyone? How long do you think it would take me to get there from Belville if I leave at about 18:30? Have you got a map or directions on how to get there for “foreigners”? We’ve moving over to daylight savings time at the end of the month, so maybe I could drop by and congratulate you WHEN you win.
Hehehe…
It’s horrible to move all the time, I’m actually looking at moving in the next couple of months, so I will feel the pain soon enough!
Glad that you’re feeling more settled, I assume it’s closer to work, etc.
It’s open to anyone, the drive would take 20mins I reckon as you’ll be driving without the traffic, etc. You can read more information at this link – http://sablogawards.pbwiki.com/FrontPage
‘WHEN’ I win, haha, thanks love!
Although these images are genuine, the accompanying email text about frozen waves is an urban legend. See http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_frozen_wave8.htm
Apparently this phenomenon is called a blue iceberg and these images were captured by an astrophysicist, Tony Travouillon, near the Antarctic coastal base of Dumont D’Urville in 2002. The ice is bluish because it is denser and contains fewer air bubbles than the more reflective white ice visible nearby. Various theories about the tinting have been put forward.
Wow Michael, thanks for the informative update, that’s really awesome knowledge. I did not receive that information with the pictures when I got the email so it’s great to know that the images are real :)
Appreciate the time you took to update us all!
Real pics, internet bullshi* description.
