Being involved in the mobile world, I try and keep myself up to date with all the latest technologies and releases. MXit 5.4 has been released and there are a couple new features available for its users.
I headed on over to wap.mxit.co.za to download myself a copy of version 5.4, the sign up process is the same as usual and doesn’t take very long. Something I have noticed, is that when I perform the sign up process using Opera Mini, the image verification step doesn’t display an image, so there’s no way for me to proceed. Fortunately, I can use the software, which comes with my Sony Ericsson to complete the process. I downloaded the latest version, replacing my previous version and it was good to go.
The first thing I noticed was a lovely installation GUI appear, as MXit installed on my mobile. The second noticable thing is the new Logo and the logging in images, rather great looking I must admit. Once I was successfully logged in, which didn’t take long at all, I could see a new background image and a much richer interface. The icons showing whether users are online or offline are rich in colour and nicely visible. My next step was to search for some new features in this version and I did come across several..
- Vibes allow you to send your contacts a vibration, which motion their mobile to vibrate.
- Audio bits allows you to record up to 60secs of audio, which can be easily transferred to any of your contacts.
- MXit now has the ability to transfer emoticon packs to and from contacts, allowing you to build up your collection.
- There is now a volume setting, allowing you to decide on the volume of all beeps and sounds which MXit allows for – this I think is very handy.
I’m pretty sure those are most of the new features, since the last release, but since my last install I can see a bundle of other features, but I think the ones I have mentioned are the newest.
MXit have also released a new website, well they did so a week or two back – I am not impressed with the new website. I think that with their budget they could have done something truly amazing, rather than a lumpy flash interface. They should definitely stick to mobile development and leave the web stuff to the professionals.

- When I downloaded the new v5.4.0, its said ” Mxit installation failed. It might be that your GPRS settings are not correct or you need to download MXit again”!!!

Hmmm,
I would suggest uninstalling mxit completely from your mobile and then downloading it again and installing again. If you hit the same problem, then you will need to contact your service provider (vodacom, mtn, cell c) and ask them to help you setup your GPRS settings.
However, it might have happened cos you were in a bad zone with low signal too.

That’s very strange Kevin. I assume you are talking about the sign up process on your mobile phone?
Another way to deal with this is http://www.yeigo.com/forum/ and place your question there, Yeigo has some excellent support staff, who will help you out.

i have a Samsung D500.
after i downloaded mxit v5.4 and opened it siad installing (1/2.
i asked my friends about it and they said i should just wait.
i felt it on before i went to bed and when i woke up it still said the same.
is there anyway possible that i could get it to work or is it just my crummy old phone.
also i would like to know if a Blackberry Pearl can download mxit.

Hey bud,
I used to have a Samsung D500 and MXIT installed perfectly on mine. Have you checked that you have enough space left on your phone for the application install? That could be one problem.
Remove the current version on your phone. Turn the phone off and then on again and redownload it and try again, that could help too.

I had the same problem with my mxit nd I kept asking people, posting on the mxit forum about this problem nd I got told that I must try download MXit as a Motorola V360 but I dnt think you have the same phone as me, I have a Samsung, V500v.
And its working on my phone now!!
But you may try it, it may work!!

When I try to download mxit 5.4.1 on my nokia 6280 its fails event if I download the secure mxit. It just says download failed. I uninstalled the previous mxit. Now I can’t even get the old mxit to download. Opera Mini work, All my apps that accesses the wap work except MXIT.

Annoying Lifecell, sorry to hear that. Why not remove anything MXit related, then turn your mobile on and off and try download again. This has had success in the past.
If that fails to work, you might need to download the MXit version for the Nokia 6270, that’s another way to fix the problem.

THanks Chris, Switching off my phone worked, I installed an older mxit from the pc nokia manger, uninstalled it from my phone. Switched it off and on again, finally I downloaded and installed the newest mxit without a problem. THanKs for your help! :-)

Java file, that’s strange, it should be there. You might need to download the Nokia 6270 version for your phone, I know people who’ve had success in doing so..

That’s really strange, that phone shouldn’t give problems at all!
kevin take your phone put it on the ground and walk a few meters away from it and run back to your phone and jump on it.make sure you got no insurance on it.and dont purchase the same make and model again

Yeah! Did u you know that the Mxit infrastructure has the capacity to deliver mobile VOIP service! I’ve been doing a comparative analysis and I realised that Nimbuzz, an overseas Java based IM application does deliver VOIP but on a low scale because of a low user base. I believe if Mxit takes this innovative direction we a “Symbian platform unrestricted” and “credit purchase unlimited” access to mobile VOIP services. This will obviously lead to another boom in numbers for Mxit!
Hi Tammix, I’m sure their infrastructure supports VoIP telepathy, it would have been crazy if they built it without that. It’ll be interesting to see what they decide to do and if they manage to pull it off. They have such a massive following, my guess is that they’re waiting to make sure they have everything completely sorted out before launching!

That’s strange, you might want to try download the software for the 6270 or similar, you might find that that will work..

That’s strange, that sounds like a software problem or even more like a GPRS signal problem. Unfortunately, I’m not a MXit staff member, you would need to contact their support for further assistance..
hey guys – i downloaded Mxit version 5.6 on my 6280. it opens the applcation and does NOT move past the “installing 1/2″ screen – the progress bar keeps going – but nothing happens..

I have a samsung SGH-830 EDGE I once had mxit and now it’s gone. When I try to download again, it tells me ‘unsupported file format’ I have deleted mxit from the phone, clear the cache, switched the phone on and off and tried again, but the same thing happens. What now? Can you help?

We are aware of the disconnection problems. This is being caused by a timeout problem on MTN’s side. MTN’s servers time’s out the connection after a certain time period of no activity on all Motorola V360 and L7 phone’s. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to fix the problem. You can give MTN’s customer care a call regarding this problem.
For a temporary solution you can use a HTTP connection, please note that a HTTP connection is a bit slower than normal.
When you run MXit and your phone gives you the “Use data network” screen select “No, ask later”, your phone should give you the same question again, select “No, ask later” again, your phone will ask this question a third time, this time select “Yes, ask once”. You will need to do this each time you run MXit.
