Virgin Mobile has launched a new package which allows subscribers to send unlimited SMSs to any network at any time.
Unlimited free SMSs.. now that’s something which brings music to everyones ears! When I think about the number of SMSs I send every month, I could save several hundred rand a month with a facility such as this.
Let’s read on..
New Virgin Mobile subscribers will get the option of unrestricted free SMSs with the company’s new unlimited SMS product. “Virgin Mobile customers get to send unlimited SMS’s to any network, any day and any time,†the cellular provider said.
To qualify for this offering consumers have to subscribe to Virgin Mobile’s “Killer Deal†– which includes a SAMSUNG U700 or LG Shine KE970 – at a monthly rate of R149.00. The deal gives subscribers 150 minutes of airtime – which can be used at any time and to any network – as well as unlimited SMSs to any network.

I haven’t looked at those phones at all (Nokia fan myself), but it does sound like a very good deal.
*sigh*
Pity I already have a contract, cause I send loads of SMSs!
Ye, it’s worth getting the contract and just putting the phone in a safe place, cos the amount of text messages we all send would soon cover most of the costs anyway.
I also have a contract and a business one for that matter, so I would prefer to not get another ;)
Be nice to see if the other networks follow. Communication costs are completely disproportionate here to earnings.
I’m loathe to take out a contract with Virgin/CellC since their reception isn’t the greatest – especially where I live. Only have Vodacom Coverage.
Ye, what I want to know is.. what is going to happen when I purchase two contracts and link them up to my computer and start using them to send 1000s of free text messages every month? Is there going to be a limit or something, otherwise my mobile marketing is going to be proudly powered by Virgin Mobile :P
I’m 50/50 whether the networks will follow suit. Virgin has had their 20c virgin to virgin SMS prices for a while now and nobodies followed on that besides just offering low cost sms’s if u buy 500+ which isn’t really competing in the same market.
I guess with the vast amount of people shifting over to virgin the other networks will need to catch a wake up. As far as I know Virgin still has only EDGE connectivity – no 3G or HSDPA which is a big negative for them, piggybacking off Cell C.
I would definitely like to see the other networks following suite and providing for text messages to their loyal users. Everyone knows that the price of text messages is incredibly inflated.
No 3G or HSDPA is definitely not a helping factor and piggy-backing off cell c, well, no comment on that!
Heya,
Is that unlimited sms’s for duration of “first” contract term … or lifetime service as long as you use the contract?
S
Steven – Honestly, I’m not completely sure what the duration would be. I would say that it is for the duration of the first contract, Virgin would be crazy to offer such a service for lifetime.
What do you reckon?
I saw a comment about “during the festive season” so there may be a catch.. not much information on it
I looked around and found these quotes, said by Peter Boyd, CEO of Virgin Mobile South Africa..
“As most South Africans are planning and organising their lives for the upcoming festive season, with this product they can now stay connected with friends and family, any time, any where and for ever,†said Peter Boyd, CEO of Virgin Mobile South Africa
Boyd says Virgin Mobile will further monitor the “air-waves†in order to identify Virgin Mobile’s SMS addicts for a mystery prizes.
Interesting – “Any time, anywhere and for ever”
hmmm … thanks Chris … i will definatly find out more now … my sms usage is about 400 – 500 depending on the people in my life at the time … even with an sms bundle it works out to a crazy amount.
*enquires*
Agreed, I find myself sending close on 1000/month, which is crazy I know, but they just seem to rack up quickly I guess.
If you come across anything, please let us know, let’s get down to the bottom of this.
Thanks mate!
Right … called a nice gentleman named Lesley …
He says the following;
its not a “24 month contract”, but its a contract, the unlimited sms’s are guarenteed for that 24 months, there after – subject to wether the service exists and continuence of the contract
Even then … the savings over that initial 24 months will be staggering for most people …
Im a gonna get contract papers this weekend and see fine print … im happy with my mtn business package, however, 24 months “free” sms’s … hell yes!
R149.00/month for two years of unlimited SMSs – that basically means that if you send over 500 messages a month, they become free. On top of that, you get a free mobile phone and 150 talk minutes per month – all in all sounds like a good deal to me.
I will honestly just buy the contract, connect the mobile to my computer and use some software to send SMSs via it whenever I need to sms. This is a big risk that Virgin is taking if you ask me.
I will grab some contract papers later on today as well. Thanks a million Steven for getting down to the bottom of this!
np ;)
Friends are like the day that gets britter by the moment, cause the time is now. It’s better to make use of the time to prosper in the coming time of frriendship.
